1979 Remco Sound Fx Machine, ‘One Of The Stupidest Toys Ever Made’, Recreated As Software

The 1979 Remco Sound Fx Machine, ‘one of the stupidest toys ever made’, has been recreated as a free app.

Why recreate one of the stupidest toys ever in software?

Just because it was stupid doesn’t mean that it wasn’t lusted after by kids everywhere back in the day. Here’s what Tom of Waveformless has to say about it:

Almost everyone I know has a childhood memory of some wonderful toy they asked Santa for and dreamed of having, but never got. The Remco SoundFX Machine was my own personal white whale.
I begged my parents for one (even at age 8, I was showing a budding interest in synthesis, I guess), and I now realize that they were completely right not to get it for me, as I probably would’ve driven them to madness within minutes of turning the thing on.

Now we are open-minded enough to realize that the Remco Sound FX Machine is not only one of the stupidest toys ever made, but that it’s also a pretty cool noise machine. So, of course, these things go for stupid money on eBay.

And the Remco Sound FX Machine has been recreated in software.

Here’s an overview of the Ghostfact Sound FX Machine:

We’re guessing that even the software version will annoy parents.

You can download the app at the Ghostfact site.

  1. One of the stupidest toys ever made in 1979: Remco Sound FX Machine
One of the stupidest toys ever made in 2010: iPad.

Let’s see what the future brings …

    1. Hehe, if I had children I would rather give them this Remco toy than an iPad or a mobile phone. Or a tape recorder. Something that promotes learning the basics first and seeing that you can go a long way by using your own creativity and some basic tools.
