The Casio VL-1 Keyboard (Demo)

The Casio VL-1 is a low cost monophonic keyboard from the year 1981. The Casio VL-1 offers some rhythm patterns, preset sounds and basic synthesis. You can change waveforms, LFO speed and envelopes.

While the editing procedure is little kludgy, programming custom sounds and adding a little reverb or effects can take the VL-1 synth into interesting new territory, as demonstrated in the video.

  1. Ah, the VL-Tone is the first synthesizer I ever programmed!!

I think my friend convinced his parents to get it for him because it was also a calculator so he could “use it for school work.” 😉

  2. Just got one about a year ago on Amazon and this thing sounds so cheesy, but in a good way. It sounds like no other synth, and will never be like any other synth. Thank you Casio for this little synth.
