First Track From The New Vince Clarke Martin Gore VCMG Collaboration – Spock

Here’s the first track from the new Vince Clarke + Martin Gore collaboration, VCMG – Spock.

After 30 years working on their respective ongoing music projects, Clarke (Erasure / Yazoo / Depeche Mode) and Gore (Depeche Mode) have together as VCMG to release a brand new album, preceded by a series of EPs.

According to the duo, Clarke & Gore want to ‘exercise their lifelong love of the genre as the techno inspired VCMG’.

Give the track a listen and let us know what you think of it!

VCMG – Spock

The first release is an EP entitled Spock. EP1 / SPOCK will feature remixes from Edit-Select, aka Tony Scott, the UK DJ / producer and founder of EditSelect Records whose previous remix credits include Speedy J, Death In Vegas and Gary Beck; Regis, British techno musician Karl O’Connor, member of the Sandwell District collective and co-founder of Downwards Records); DVS1, Brooklyn based producer Derek VanScoten (Radiohead / Sleigh Bells / Emancipator); plus XOQ, the alter ego of Californian Überzone / Q, who mixed the VCMG album.

  1. I’ve only heard the snippet at Amazon (cant hear the file above whilst at work) but I thought the bassline sounded fantastic. Looking forward to hearing the rest as I’m quite into this minimal sound at the moment myself.

  2. ps never been a fan of the description ‘techno’. I always associated it with bad electronic dance music/acts/tracks or what rockers would call ALL electronic music. “Yeh I hate that techno music, its not real music is it, not like guitar music” 🙂

    1. Not real music, eh? Eddie Van Halen is coming over later to beat you with his Oberheim and to make you listen to the opening from Jump 1,000,000 more times. At which point you will be qualified to work at Guitar Center.

  3. what ever. it’s pretty cool. it just sounds like they should try actually being in the same room at the same time instead of emailing threads.
i’ll give the album a listen simply for the fact that vince clarke is a complete fucking synth nut “vulvan style” and i dig that.

  4. The only thing i like of the track is the tight compression and limiting. the rest was just plain old boring and to be honest, a big dissapointment.

  5. Yeah, it does kind of sound like filler. But maybe that’s what it’s supposed to be – background music or maybe raw material for DJs to mix into other songs.

It also sounds depressing. I say don’t let Martin Gore’s morose artistic temperament anywhere near the album, but definitely give him a microphone – he’s a wonderful singer.

Though that does bring up a brilliant collaboration idea – “Music for the Morose or simply Pouty” by Martin Gore and Morrissey.

  6. The fact is this sound like something anybody could have made. Cetainly it’s well produced. But there’s a whole army of kids out there that are perfectly capable of producing a well produced track like this. It totally lacks personality, it lacks that certain something. I like it when artists try something new, but then make it something new, not something anybody could have made!
But then I admit… techno is not my genre.

  7. I like the track, though I admit it’s nothing anyone else couldn’t do. But what I find very interesting is how it’s “not enough” from these two guys, yet if someone like Deadmous5 did it everyone would give him some kind of big award and have him bronzed. Because these two guys had success back when you had to earn it by distinction and creativity, we somehow unconsciously hold them to a completely different standard than newer artists.

  8. The reason this might sound a little bit “too late” or “boring” is the fact that the genre they choose IS quite bland in itself. So, seen from an exeperimental electronica view it is bound to appear a little bit “ok whatever”. On the other hand, viewed from the minimal techno direction this is actually quite nice and has a lot more to offer than most tracks coming out of that genre. If you sit back and kick up the volume, this is actually quite detailed music.

Anyhow. While waiting for an eventual new DM album sometime in the coming ten years or so, and avoiding the contemporary – quite sleepy and screaming for new injection – Erasure releases, this is a must have by two legends in the collection!
