This the 2012 NAMM Show, CyberStep introduced the KDJ-One GameBoy style mobile music workstation.

Features:

  • Compact size and battery allow it to be carried and used anywhere.
  • WLAN support enables quick and wireless integration into any existing production environment.
  • Multi-touch screen, keypad, and jog dial.
  • ACIDized WAV support allows time stretching/pitch shifting of audio clips.
  • Internal synthesizer can also be accessed via external software as a VSTi.
  • Sonic vibrator

The KDJ-One is priced at $799 without WIFI or $829. Which seems pretty high, but none of our gear came with a sonic vibrator, either.

  1. Hell! After saving the qy 70 is about all I could afford, I wonder it it was this expensive too when it came out? Then again this concept of mobile music stations has alwaysmesmorized me, I think everyone will want one. Very cool!

  2. I am totally NOT an iPad guy, but it’s hard to see why anyone would spend the money on this when they could get an iPad plug some other DAW apps.

Its only saving grace is that it’s ALSO a VST plug-in, which I think is totally cool, and he should mentioned that before anything, and then compare that feature to an iPad.

iPad is cool, but it’s either iPad or legit studio. This seems to bridge that.

    1. Ipad or legit studio? What planet are you on? Fully credible tracks can now be produced on an iPad without need for so called legit studios or hardware. There are now synths available for the iOS that are equally as good as any external synth and sequencers that can be used intelligently to create the tracks themselves

It’s 2012- the year of the app! It’s the future of music making and almost anyone can afford apps and an iPad is affordable if you can afford a laptop..

      1. To the 17 who disliked

Keep your huge clunky keyboards and pcs that crash, I don’t mind

Just dont disrespect those that choose progress and a more ecologically sound approach..

  3. I’m going to have to agree with PRESSPL>Y on this one. Why bother with this when you can get an ipad cheaper? I’d also like to add that you could get a gameboy, flash card, lsdj, a prosound mod, a backlight mod, and be able to build a sync device all for MUCH much cheaper. Like, $700 cheaper…

    1. Seriously, what a missed opportunity.

There’s definitely something to be said about tactile feedback and a more handheld design, but those prices make it a joke. I could see $300 or so, depending on versatility, as they should have designed the screen interface out for iOS/Android/WP7 and seen how things went from there. Hell, they could have made a Free/Lite Standalone version that doesn’t even need the hardware just to get people interested.

  5. In response to Appfreeks:

I actually did not mean to infer that iPad studios were not legit. That’s not true at all, and you are right.

However, there is a clear gap between the two formats. Either you are producing on the iPad, or you are producing in a studio, where, presumably, you have much more tactile control. After all, home studios (and professional studios) are meant to suit particular needs. iPad still needs to bridge that gap, and I’m sorry, but it needs to do with without all the dongles.

The fact that this little portable studio doubles as a VST that can integrate with any studio (presumable Mac and PC), I find that concept genius.

  6. Thanx for responding, I was not attacking, I actually don’t think dongles or midi ins or whatever are necessary, some of us like the touchscreen, I have not touched a keyboard or mouse for a long time and when I did so recently it felt very wierd and unnatural

    But that’s just me lol

My only concern, and I apologise for getting you wrong, is that the traditional software people keep minimising apps

Despite the fact that software may have more features, still, credible results can be made from apps and I think the synthheds need to respect this.

In time, likely this year, after pad3 comes out, we will see very advanced daws come out, I know of two in the works and have beta tested one and it’s amazing

The app people don’t diss the software/ hardware people so why should the converse happen?

But actually, work done on iPad can be transferred to laptops , for example, work done on its GarageBand can be exported to logic..or simple wave loops can exported and even used in reason or acid…

  7. Difference between software and apps?

Size mostly, as it mb or gb and it seems price and portability

Both in essence, accomplish same things

  8. Experts predict that within five years, pc software will be practically discontinued in favour of apps, hardware will no longer be needed. Just touch screen devices will remain

There will be resistance, but you will not be able to run and hide with a huge keyboard under your arm lol…

  9. If you disagree with my above statement, just look at the recent statistics of apple sales

Tell me one synth of software company that shifts half as many units? And don’t quite trial versions of fl studio please lol

DOwn with the resistance, long live the touchscreen!

  10. Lol, u guys are really in the dark ages

Do a sales comparison between apps and software, while u r at it do a sales comparison between touchscreens and pcs lol

  11. The first company that gives us a midi only sequencer in a hardware format, like a portable ATARI will do very well.
More hardware now than ever.but no real midi only sequencers to drive them that matched the Atari.

  12. Honestly, I’ve followed the conception and industry’s delivery of these new portable studios and I will say this…

The Indamixx was a total flop which is the vibe I get from this product. It’s ultra compactness makes its a difficult interface. It also seems to be a rather fragile os still in development.

The best portable studio Solution I have seen yet is the BKE Brat Thang which offers more expanded aspects of the same features and more, it’s built like a tank and it’s around the same price. Oh yeah, it’s tiny compared to and mpc, a little bigger than a vhs cassettes tape.
