Can The QuNeo MIDI Controller Survive A Beer Shower & Getting Flung Out Of A Two Story Window?

DJTT gives the Keith McMillen Instruments QuNeo MIDI Controller a stress test that simulates the type of abuse that a DJ controller is likely to get in typical use – getting showered with beer and flung out a two-story window.

Think your MIDI controller could survive this?

Note: Don’t try this at home. But if you do, make sure you get some good video.

  1. Please do a demo of it plugged in…. being played… and beer being poured on top… Then this test is real.. Otherwise this is smoke and mirrors….

He even says ..when you in the club playing…. Well.. when Im in the club playing .. the controller is not unplugged… nor is it thrown out a window to shake the beer spill off …

  2. Totally unsurprising and a bit boring video. Of course that critter still ran.

You won’t notice the beer effect until it had some time to dry up. Then the sugars and other nastyness in there have had time to do their work. Often resulting in sticky keys and all sorts of annoying things.

As to the fall… you could see immediately that the thing was acting like a sort of overweighted kite.

I’d be more impressed if this critter still worked after not having been used for a week or so.

  3. Mine didn’t survive a week in my studio before I shipped it back. I think a 10 year old aluminum can is better built…and probably a better controller than the quneo. I do love my new APC40 though (it actually works like it’s supposed to).

  4. Good point about waiting longer to see if the liquid bakes this thing – but can’t see most MIDI controllers surviving even this long.

Can you imagine doing that with your average control keyboard?

  5. I know my quneo never worked properly. I read the manual and followed the online tutorials. I finally chalked it up to me buying into thr hype.

I should have realized when it arrived by how cheaply it was constructed. I actually put up a sort of mini-review on the idm forums where I laid out all the issues with it ( ie: in clip launching mode it wouldn’t launch the clips not matter how many times I set the thing!!!). I thought I might have gotten a bad one but apparently lots of others have had similar, if not worse, problems with theirs and returned them too.

          1. I tried evything that was suggested in the guide and the tutorials. On mine the pads were so stiff there was no give at all, none of the buttons were the same height, the sliders would rock around in their slots, and the side seam was tight on one end and almost open on the opposite.

I’m not the pnly person who had issues with theirs.

      1. Hmmm a while ago I posted a link to the forum where I posted my little review and now that post is gone from here. Maybe this site doesn’t allow links?

  6. ok so they didnt test it later… but how many companies would pour beer on their products and then throw it out the window… not m-audio, and sure as he** not korg. i thought it was an awesome demo!

  7. It’s a little fishy that the music & finger moves don’t match in the post-beer/window-toss.

    It’s actually a lot fishy.

Probably that’s a pretty durable device. But, unless the audio went out of sync for other reasons, I’d say it was fake.

  8. It seems to me that pouring beer over a device with its usb port exposed is more dangerous than it would be plugged in. If the seals between the pads and case were unsound then then it wouldn’t matter much anyway as moisture has a way of finding its way through cracks. As for the overweighted kite comment, I think that, given the nature of the test, falling slowly should be seen as a plus, not some sort of sign of a rigged test. The results of basic aerodynamics shouldn’t be equated to conspiracy. Or maybe we should regulate the height of each window gear is chucked through based on these factors to ensure a fair contest.
