Diego Stocco’s Custom Built Orchestra

Sound designer Diego Stocco has a new video, Custom Built Orchestra, that features a virtual orchestra made up of his performances with original instrument designs.

In the video, Stocco plays his Experiviolon, which combines elements of violin and electric guitar; Experibass; Arcophonico, an electroacoustic instrument made from a tree branch; Luminopiano, created by inserting microphones into light bulbs; and the Sub-Bass Column.

Details on the instruments are available at his Behance profile page.

Here’s what Stocco has to say about his Custom Built Orchestra:

I always been fascinated by the raw musical power that an orchestra can express, so, after creating a series of videos where I’m performing a multi-track piece with an instrument I designed, I decided to take the concept a step farther and create my own orchestra made of unusually unique instruments.

The project started by handcrafting a diverse selection of instruments, then I wrote a composition where I could fit them all in and finally performed each part. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed doing it!

Stocco notes that his custom orchestra is built primarily from ‘junk’ instruments. “Besides objects and materials that I purchase at the hardware store, I’m using parts that come from instruments with structural damages, making them unusable in a traditional sense. Every year, hundreds of musical instruments get thrown away or sold for parts only, including pianos and classical strings.”

  1. I can’t speak for everyone, but for me, Diego’s biggest talent is making it easy to feel his passion for what he’s doing. It reminds me of the joy I took in playing my bowed psaltry and various small drums over the years. I’m just a DAW-&-synth guy now, but having had those rich building experiences makes all the difference in both my ability to play more organically and to genuinely enjoy it. Diego imparts that with rare sincerity and finesse. Part of why Omnisphere is so impressive is that his fingerprints are on it. The results of his spark are the opposite of the wet blanket of overly-automated music. Beautiful demo, pal.

  2. I haven’t used Omnisphere, but I’m always impressed by this guy’s videos.

Whatever he lacks in cool gear he always makes up with creativity. And, no matter how experimental he gets, the result always sounds very musical!
