Synth pioneer Dave Smith is featured in a new interview at Amazona.de (German). In the interview, Smith discusses his current lineup of synth gear and the Tempest analog drum machine.

Smith also reveals that he will be introducing a new synth module, based on the DSI Prophet 12, at the 2014 NAMM Show. Here’s Smith with a prototype of the new module:

    1. Do you think Dave Smith cares about musicians? He cares about profits, not Prophets.
      Look, a Prophet 08 is better than a Moog Voyager….more notes….polyphony.
08 Module is $1549.00, so what is the 12 Module going to cost? $2000.00 – $2449.00 is my guess.
For that money buy an 08 Module or a Roland Jupiter 50 for $2000.00….Why? Because of the lack of knobs.

    1. That’s 2000 Euros (or US$2735.80 today), which is about 75% of what I saw the Prophet 12 keyboard going for on a German site. Given that I’d expect the US price to be near $2250. Still a nice savings off the keyboard.

      1. It says 2000 euros, but I’m sure that $2000 would be suggested retail in the US. The full keyboard is offerred in the US for $2999 – so it will have to be a good bit lower than that. In the US market, stores compete heavily and never make you pay full suggested retail – $3299. Sadly, Europeans have to deal with VAT taxes and many stores sell at retail price. I was even shocked to see that in Europe many people tried to sell used gear for about as much as they paid for it new…. Here in the US, stores like Sweetwater are willing to work with people on price when they make bulk purchases. If a couple people make gear purchases at once, you could probably get a brand new one for $2500. That’s what I did for my Voyager. Pro Tip – if you are building a studio or make regular gear purchases, don’t buy piecemeal – buy all at once and negotiate the price. You’d be surprised how willing the stores are to work with you!

  1. I’m sure it has one hell of an editor, because in this configuration, it comes across a lot like a Nord Modular. I’d like to have seen those ribbons retained, but that’s still a wad of power. People with decent controllers are saving up for this as we speak….

    1. totally hat that six trak vibe but also looks modern. thats what i love about it.
only thing odd is its not 100% symmetrical when it looks like it should be.

  2. Pah!

Quality gear I”m sure but overpriced.

Wasted front panel space could fit more knobs… eg. ADSR env.controls.
Performance controls like the ribbon mentioned, a joystick or touchpad too.

  3. I really like the idear of a full engine, interface cut down version for those of us, who can easily do with a computer editor to program it remotely (yes we are still out there!)… it of course has to be well MIDI implemented to work. Just hope it’ll be rack mountable… tired of all those desktop units that take up all your table space.

  4. This strikes me as the kind of synth module that would benefit massively from the availability of a good plugin that integrates the synth into a DAW like they did for the Moog Voyager.

  5. Either more price and all the knobs.

    Or

    A LOT cheaper.

One way to increase programmalibilty in affordable manner would be longer screen and 8 knobs above and below it. That way they could make awesome sequencer as well.

  6. a good plugin option is the ipad through a sequencer and routable thorugh the effects like the analogue four, as a standalone synth with ipad it becomes very intesesting, powerfull and portabe not to mention expandable.

  7. Not near enough knobs, and the corny rubber buttons are such a throwback. I like the idea of the symmetry on the filter in front, but seriously, the closest controls to the user are resonance? This thing is not well thought out at all, and looks like it is designed the way it is, to simply to make itself different from the virus layout. It needs pitch control on the oscillators, dedicated fx knobs and basically about 23 more knobs and few of the same slide control as found on the tempest. Heck, why not just a row of those, and no knobs?

  8. People, it’s a prototype! Go and search for some prototype photos of what once became the Tempest… But I do agree this machine would need more knobs for my taste too.

  9. For $2000+ there should definitely be far more knobs. Make it a bit closer in price to the key P12 if you have to, people will pay for portability if they need it. However, I think their product line could definitely bear, say, a 4-voice desktop (or maybe a poly-chainable half-rack) with just the 4 touch-knobs and a stripped down display. I think they could do it for 1000 easy. It wouldn’t be competing too much with the all-analog tetra, which is probably due for a refresh soon anyway, to bring it more in line with the Mopho SE. That’s my 2 cents anyway!

  10. As discussed at ADE the pricing will be approx. $2200 USD. It will come with an in depth editor from soundtower. As discussed was that Dave could have added more knobs but that would have driven the price up significantly and increased the size of the module. If you have used the Tempest you know how well laid out an quick to access Dave’s instruments are. This will be no exception.
