Wake Up With the World – The Generative Music Alarm Clock

Wake Up With The World is an iOS application that’s designed to be a sort of generative music alarm clock.

When you wake your GPS coordinates are translated into musical notes and combined with those of every other person waking up at the same moment as you. All these notes are combined and the song you wake to is composed of the ‘presence’ of everyone else doing the same.

Wake Up With The World is part of Functional Embrace, Eric Rieper’s exhibition, debuting at the Pratt Institute Department of Digital Arts gallery on April 14th, 2014.

“Each participant becomes a unique instrument in the composition, taking one of four roles: lead, bass, chords, or percussion,” notes Rieper. “As more people join, the length of the composition increases, as does the tempo of the music and the root note that the song is based off of.”

Wake Up With The World is available as a free download for iOS in the App Store.

    1. That seems like a key feature for it to have – I wonder what they are doing that would require that? Does it need to be in the foreground to be able to ‘wake up’ at a certain time?

  1. Due to strictions in Apples SDK, the app cannot run in background. Apple has defined what apps “need” to do in order to keep running in the background – if they don´t e.g. play continuous audio, they are shut down after 3 minutes and you need to bring them back to the foreground in order to resume. Personally, I dislike this a lot, because while Apple is saying that iOS 7 does finally feature multitasking, it does in fact NOT (only if you use the few features which allow backgrounding). For many apps iOS 7 is a major step backwards, because apps are shut down after 3 minutes instead of 10 minutes like it was in iOS 6.

  2. Hi all,
Eric Rieper, creator of the piece here– thank you so much for the interest in my project!

Tom, as written above, is correct. Unfortunately, there is no way, due to Apple restrictions / SDK functionality for the app to run in the background. Because of the PD synthesis it cannot do background audio, and sadly, Apple does not allow a way for an app to be launched or called to the foreground based on a timer– only alerts.

Similarly, the recently launched Pandora Radio alarm clock requires it to be run in the foreground with the device kept on.

  3. Hi, Neat post. There is a problem along with your web site in internet explorer,
might test this? IE nonetheless is the market chief and a large part of other folks
will omit your fantastic writing due to this problem.

  4. Sometimes just by changing existing locks and keys the purpose will
be served. Those factors are company, labour, amount of time
allocated to the call, and materials. Ignition system in the car is
a complicated system and a person shouldn.
