USB MIDI Breath & Bite Controller Adds Expression To Virtual Instrument Performances

usb-midi-breath-bite-controllerTEC has introduced the TEControl USB MIDI Breath and Bite Controller – a MIDI wind controller that they say ‘enables musicians and composers to achieve outstanding realism in their performance when using computer-based virtual instruments.”

With a bite sensor integrated in the mouthpiece sensing lip bite force in addition to breath pressure, it is possible to control any two parameters of your virtual instrument, for example expression/vibrato or expression/pitch.

Specifications:

  • Sensitive to breath pressure and lip bite force
  • Insensitive to ambient pressure
  • Software configurable (independently for breath and bite) min/max sensor input and MIDI out ranges, sensitivity curve, attack/decay filter, MIDI channel and MIDI CC, Pitch bend or Aftertouch
  • Save and load your presets
  • Full resolution for all input ranges (MIDI 0-127)
  • Firmware upgradable for future enhancements
  • USB-MIDI class compliant, Plug&Play out of the box on Windows and Mac
  • USB powered
  • Configuration Utility available for Windows and MAC, tested on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 (excluding RT), OS X 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, 10.9

  1. It might be easy to underestimate the potential of this kind of controller. However, brass and woodwind players know that the lips (embouchure) are capable of a great deal of very subtle and/or dramatic impact on sound– and it is intuitive.

Using breath to control volume & filter, and using the lip/bite force sensor to control pitch and filter (without much range) would allow more realism with wind emulations, but also more expression with other sounds.

I already got the regular, breath-only controller from TEC. But I’ve had this on my mind for a while. I even bought several force-sensing resistors and a Highly Liquid MIDI CPU to try to rig it. But glad to see this arrive. I think for many who have wanted a BC, it sweetens the deal to the point where it is hard to pass on.

    1. Unbelievable how realistically he is able to control the virtual flute with just the breath and bite controller! Wow! Thanks for sharing!

  2. It’s great. I really like to have or buy this mouth piece for me. But I don’t know where to get it from. Can you help please. Thanks My phone is 626 991 9138
