John Carpenter Announces Debut Album – Lost Themes

john-carpenter-lost-themesFilm director John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape From New York, The Thing) has announced plans to release his debut album, Lost Themes.

While Carpenter is best known for his filmmaking, he has also scored most of his films, creating iconic themes and an iconic soundtrack style along the way.

Here’s what Carpenter has to say about his new album:

“Lost Themes was all about having fun.

It can be both great and bad to score over images, which is what I’m used to. Here there were no pressures. No actors asking me what they’re supposed to do. No crew waiting. No cutting room to go to. No release pending. It’s just fun.

And I couldn’t have a better set-up at my house, where I depended on (collaborators) Cody (Carpenter, of the band Ludrium) and Daniel (Davies, who scored I, Frankenstein) to bring me ideas as we began improvising. The plan was to make my music more complete and fuller, because we had unlimited tracks. I wasn’t dealing with just analogue anymore. It’s a brand new world. And there was nothing in any of our heads when we started other than to make it moody.

“’Both classical music and rock and roll are part of my musical language, which is riff-driven. So if you listen carefully, I’m sure you can hear some echoes from my past. But I’m sure that’s true of any composer. You just bring your music along with you.”

Here’s a preview of Carpenter’s Lost Themes, Vortex:

Lost Themes is scheduled for release February 5th, 2015.

Tracks:

1. Vortex
2. Obsidian
3. Fallen
4. Domain
5. Mystery
6. Abyss
7. Wraith
8. Purgatory
9. Night

  1. i still love the soundtrack for The Thing… so minimal… so terrifying. that two-note loop…. duh-duh………duh-duh…………duh-duh…….. oh man now i wanna go watch it.

    1. Ennio Morricone did the soundtrack to The Thing. But, Carpenter used some of those ideas in Prince of Darkness. Those two being part one and part two in his “apocalypse trilogy.”

  2. Yeah, this will be an instant buy when it releases! John Carpenter has been a huge influence on me. Halloween III Is one of his best soundtracks, as far as really synth heavy goes.

  3. this is wonderful news!
    I cant wait!
Escape From New York, The Thing, Halloween especially the 3rd film are what got me interested in Synthesisers!
This Album cant come out quick enough!
Bravo Mr Carpenter the preview sounds amazing!

  4. I was a young child in the 80’s when his more notable films were released. But, I still listen to the Halloween III and Escape from New York soundtracks a lot. It’s really cool to see that other people like that stuff or were inspired by it.

Judging by that ‘Vortex’ track, I won’t be just picking up the new album out of a sense of nostalgia; I’m expecting some excellent music.
