Koushion MIDI Step Sequencer Updated

koushionKoushion MIDI Step Sequencer for iPad has been updated with some significant functionality improvements.

Koushion turns an iPad into a step sequencer that can be used to control iOS apps, desktop music software or hardware MIDI devices, using a hardware MIDI adapter.

Here’s what’s new in Koushion 4:

  • Steps can now be muted individually.
  • CC automation is now available. You can now automate MIDI control changes for every single step of your compositions. The full range is available, so you can program 120 controllers for each step of your composition.
  • Projects can now be imported and exported using iTunes File Sharing.
  • Updated for iOS 8.

Koushion is available via the App Store for US $7.99.

If you’ve used Koushion, let us know what you think of it!

  1. Also, a quick bit of clarification: this update is only available for iOS 8 devices. Apple has ceased supporting iOS 7 several weeks ago, making it impossible for me to tmeporarily revert my iPad back to iOS 7.1.2 for testing. iOS 7 users that install Koushion get version 3.5, not 4.0. Apple shows an alert to this effect, but it still shows the Koushion 4.0 description, screenshots, etc. in the store, and there is nothing I can do about this. As soon as you update to iOS 8, you will of course get the latest Koushion 4.x update for free 🙂

    Sorry for any confusion!

  2. I don’t understand the lack of IOS 7 support… there are MANY apps that are regularly updated and remain compatible as far back as 5.1 Thumbjam, Lemur, Sampletank to name just a few big hitters,..

There are very few dependencies brought in with IOS8 that would change the underlying architecture of a MIDI sequencer, and with the state of Music updates currently being in such a flux… I just don’t get why you wouldn’t want ot reach more of your potential buyers who are (sensibly in my opinion) sticking on IOS 7 for now.

    1. Please see my previous post explaining that I no longer have the ability to test on iOS 7. The bottom line is that I would much rather release a build that has been extensively tested on the OS that it supports, rather than support a legacy OS.

Every iPad back to the iPad 2 supports iOS 8, and iOS 8 doesn’t introduce any new performance overhead (unlike its predecessor), so I would have no issues intalling it on an iPad 2 if I still had one. For those who don’t want to upgrade to iOS 8, the App Store will automatically install the latest version compatible with your device.

  3. great app! 🙂

per note slide / gate / velocity would be handy

would be cool if we could rename the CC number to a word too

    thanks!

  4. well dont dare to upgrade yet, but I like this cc thing, I wonder, can I have different length with midinotes and cc, and can i change programchange also? would like the possilbility as tnr-i to play polyrytmic and also polyrythmic with cc if you understand what i mean, to make the cc changes alter more

    1. Variable step length, per-step velocity, and per-step gate are coming in future 4.x updates, but are not available yet.

No, CC is currently limited to Control Change, but I will definitely consider adding Program Change support as well. The hardest thing to figure out with that is going to be deciding where to cram that in the interface 😉
