New Roland Eurorack Effects Modules Introduced At Musikmesse

Roland_bitrazer

At Musikmesse 2015, Roland has introduced a new line of Eurorack effects modules, along with the System-1m rack modular synthesizer.

The new modules are standalone, table-top and Eurorack compatible effects that Roland says are ‘for next-level sound mangling and experimentation’.

The modules include distortion, crusher, delay and scatter.

Here’s a video intro to the new modular systems:

Here’s an overview of the four effects modules:

Bitrazer is a unique modular effect, combining intense bit and sample rate crushing effects and control and flexibility.

Able to be used as a tabletop unit or as a Eurorack module, and with an array of CV/Gate inputs, this compact 21 HP unit has a wide range of uses from studio production to live performance.

BITRAZER has large, ultra-smooth controls with over 16 million steps of resolution and is fully re-programmable via computer, smartphone or tablet.

While it sounds great out of the box, you can fully customize BITRAZER’s internal signal path by re-patching its array of virtual sub-modules via a custom application that works on Mac and PC as well as iOS and Android devices.

Submodules are re-patched through a simple and intuitive drag and drop interface that even lets you choose which parameters are assigned to the high-resolution “GRF” knobs. You can reprogram BITRAZER in realtime via USB connection or save and recall patches with a simple audio signal. You can also share patches with other BITRAZER users.

Features:

  • Intense bit and sample rate destruction
  • CV/Gate parameter control including sample rate, bit depth, and filter
  • Tabletop unit or 21 HP Eurorack module using AC adaptor or Eurorack power
  • 24-bit knobs with over 16 million steps of resolution
  • Re-programmable via Mac, PC, iOS, Android application
  • 15 patchable submodules, expandable with free updates
  • 2 inputs and 2 outputs with dual-mono or stereo capability
  • AIRA Link compatible
  • 24bit/96kHz audio interface
  • Carefully crafted in Japan
  • Includes braided patch cables

  1. Very interested in the reprogrammability, I wonder if it will be simple control rerouting with a couple of different effects, or will I be able to make a bitcrusher out of the scatter module and the like?
Either way Roland’s been on a roll lately. You even get braided patch cables with these! Just hope the price and features are right, particularly for the Scooper, as most Eurorack aficionados would already have something like the other two.

  2. Everyone acts like Roland was resting on their laurels. They have to sell a ton more than a small boutique manufacturer to stay profitable, so their market research has to be spot on–which takes time. Clearly they were really doing their homework. For as “late” as they were to the game (lol), I think they are kicking ass and wiping the floor with their new stuff. Bravo.

  3. Interesting choice that you do the re-programming by sending it as audio.

Anyway, I have to remind myself “you do not need another gear”, but Roland is hard to resist recently! 🙂

  4. They should have come up with a nifty overlay for these that can be changed when you flash them into different module types.

  5. Demora and Torcido. Hmm…
I guess Roland has been learning some Latin based language.

Refreshing on the tech approach too!
