Rossum Electro-Music Assimil8or Sampler Sneak Preview

ASSIMIL8OR

At Superbooth 16Rossum Electro-Music introduced the Assimil8or 8-channel sampler for Eurorack modular synthesizers.

The Assimil8or is currently under development, so creator Dave Rossum was offering sneak preview at Superbooth:

The Assimil8or Multi-Timbral Phase Modulation Sampler will offer eight independent channels of sampling, with sound quality that can range from extremely hi-fi to low fi, all with extensive real-time CV control.

The Assimil8or is expected to be available this Fall from Rossum Electro-Music dealers worldwide. Pricing is to be announced.

    1. This isn’t just a sample player for one. It has inputs and it samples by itself. Why would he reissue E-MU Samplers? They went out of business and the designs are now owned by a 3rd party. This will be the first legit sampler in modular I’ve ever seen.

    2. Why don’t you make a better one then? That would really be great..

Or at least you could show us another multichannel sampler with this level of control in the Eurorack format?

It would be really interesting to know what exactly you think sucks so much about this because I’m struggling to see it..

      1. actually this is very limited in cv terms, only three per player! this is not usual in eurorack where most of us expect every parameter to be cv-able…

    3. Jan, I’m no fan of Euroracks however Dave’s modules are some of the most forward thinking and quality constructed modules out there. On top of which his bloke is one of the brightest and most accomplished synthesizer engineer/designer/maker’s and yet he has virtually no ego and is as humble and down to earth as one could hope.

He has been involved with synthesizers, advanced DSP, communications DSP, mobile phone chips to name just a few.

And you pawned a half baked scheme to develop a VA with specs that did not match the actual specifications, most of your “modules” and VA clones are underpowered and poorly constructed and your chip designs are remedial engineering efforts better suited for a student project.

Want to rethink that for a moment?

    4. What we’re witnessing is the rebirth of innovative synthesis hardware. Eurorack offers a low barrier to entry that lets designers try out new ideas with minimal risk, and we’re seeing a gradual shift from traditional analog modules such as VCOs and VCFs to far more complicated digital designs.

I welcome designs like this and really look forward to the sonic possibilities on the horizon in the next few years. The hardware renaissance is just getting started.

  1. Really looking forward to seeing how this thing turns out. This might just be the sampler I’ve been waiting for, for a very long time!

  2. first look at morpheus and control forge, quite interesting i have to say! And although too early too say that filter sounded best than my ultraproteus..:)

  3. 96kHz @ 24-bits?

I’m interested. I’d love 192kHz, but I can certainly settle for 96kHz. It’s that bitrate that’s got my head turning. Most Eurorack samplers go as high as 16-bits, and bit depth does count in this day and age.

  4. This is one module i really want. Being able to sample straight in the modular world and having so many playback channels with 3 cv-able parameters each sounds like a very flexible proposition. I don’t know any module that has this many channels in so little space. I think i read somewhere that you can chose which parameter is controlled by each cv input for each channel.

  5. Can you trigger sampling with cv? Cannot see that info anywhere.

I hope that it’s possible, would be interesting to program sampling instead of doing it manually.

  6. It’s a lot of cables to get this thing working… I think I’d be happier with a 4 chan sampler and better looping, merging modes and smart use of cv such as a single cv to control all channels but with modes like scaled pitches, quadrature lfo, risset tones etc…

Or a USB port for external MIDI/OSC control. 40 cables needed to set this up fully is a lot of cables… It’s a great looking sampler and I imagine it being hugely creative but 8 channells with 5 cables per channel is a lot of control and realistically I dont think I could do it.
