Synth design pioneer Tom Oberheim is 80 today.
Born on July 7, 1936, in Manhattan, Kansas, Oberheim has been creating music electronics since the late 60’s. In the years since, he’s created effects processors, sequencers, drum machines, iconic analog synths and played an important part in establishing the MIDI standard.
Oberheim is still actively developing synths:
- He reintroduced the Oberheim SEM (Synthesizer Expander Module in 2009.
- In 2012, he introduced an updated Two Voice Pro synthesizer.
- In 2016, he and Dave Smith introduced the OB-6 synthesizer.
- He’s also recently introduced several Eurorack modules, including the Oberheim SEM Plus & the Oberheim Mini Sequencer.
