Chagall On Performing Electronic Music Using Gestural Control

This video documents a TEDx Talk by Chagall (Chagall van den Berg) – part of team behind the Mi.Mu MIDI controller gloves.

In her talk, she discusses the technical details of the Mi.Mu gloves and mapping gestures to MIDI or OSC controls. She also talks about how she previously worked with traditional MIDI controllers and how using the gloves freed her from working behind a table of gear, opening up new performance opportunities.

Chagall is a vocalist and electronic music producer, and is also part of the team behind Imogen Heap’s Mi.Mu gloves.

Work on the gloves is documented at Mi.Mu Development Blog.

  1. Brilliant work. It makes her look like a goddess, conjuring sounds with her hands, instead of looking like she’s checking her mail. πŸ™‚

  2. Like Chagall I was very exited about these. Funded the Mi.MU gloves Kickstarter project. It failed. Afterwards they asked for donations on their website. Donated, assumed that at some point they would be affordable since the electronics did not look at at all that high end. Then for pre-order they were only $4950. It’s was no-brainer, very suitable for me because I don’t have a brain. πŸ™‚ But because of that I also forgot to order them. I think you still can’t buy them. Bebopsensors.com (KMI) seems to have something in the making. Hopefully something commercially available and affordable as well

  3. We live in a time where VR goggles are all the rage again and some actual technological progress is made. Perhaps that translates to data gloves? Obligatory reference: Smell the Glove. It’s like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none.
