New DIY Synth, Deckard’s Dream, Inspired By Yamaha CS-80 (Sneak Preview)

Roman Filippov (Sputnik Modular) shared this sneak preview of Deckard’s Dream – a new 8-voice polyphonic DIY analog synth design.

Details are to be announced, but – with a name like Deckard’s Dream – it appears that the DIY project is inspired by the classic Yamaha CS-80 and the sounds of Vangelis‘ score for Blade Runner.

Check it out and let us know what you think!

  1. Looks amazing!

However, that’s a pretty intense build for DIY. Perhaps in this case, DIY stands for “Do it YOURSELF!” (as in, you yourself, and not me, please, and thank you.)

    1. You are correct. Do it yourself for $1,000 … or “Do it YOURSELF” for $5,000 (as in even the builder REALLY does not want to DIY again!).

  2. Nice to see anything 19″ in an age of flimsy, tacky, cheap, toylike desktopcluttergadgets… but PLEASE… NO
EXTERNAL POWERSUPPLY. And no garish lights.

  3. OMG amazing idea!!…. I want to see videos and listen demos of the magical polyphonic after touch in these module!!!

  4. Wait, what, there are presets?!

Would be magnificent and 1000 is not bad, but I’m not an expert on soldering so I’m quite certain that I’d just mess it up and cry.

  5. Oh my . As a former CS 80 owner I’m intrigued, and hopeful. Expanded would add ring mod and effects not be n this unit

  6. With a build that complicated, I’d probably rather have it PNP’ed and baked by a reputable outfit. I’d happy do the assembly with fully populated PCBs. I wonder if SparkFun or some other place could do that dirty work with their semi-automated system.

  7. This does not look too difficult to build and the price seems reasonable if it includes the finished chassis, good documentation, etc. Many of the components are thru-hole with soft leads (e.g. discrete transistors, caps, etc.) so it would not be easy to fab the boards with pick-n-place. Overall I like it, though I’m not crazy about the external power supply and really not crazy about having a fan in the thing.

    1. Thru-hole? Look again– they’re mostly surface-mount. Not a deal-killer, but not as care-free in assembly as thru-hole… With thru-hole you can stuff the boards almost anywhere (I do it while sitting on the couch watching TV). Surface-mount requires sitting at a table with my magnification loupes on…

  8. I would love to have a go at building that. I can almost hear it just thinking about it. not sure about the external power supply though, I have too many wallwarts already.

    1. I’m sure that there will be builders out there somewhere who will come up with an alternate enclosure allowing for internal PSU, etc., and then formulate a group buy.
That’s what has happened with e-licktronic’s YOCTO 808 clone, amongst others.

  9. What kind of polyphonic aftertouch controller am I going to use to play this? They all suck or are channel aftertouch instead of poly.
