Gibbon Digital Intros T4 MIDI Interface

Gibbon Digital has introduced a new MIDI interface, the T4.

The T4 is described as a ‘next generation MIDI interface’. It’s class compliant, so it works without drivers on Windows, OS X, Android, iOS & Linux.

Features:

  • Class Compliant USB
  • 4x MIDI out
  • Compact and sturdy design
  • MIDI thru functionality
  • Low power draw
  • USB powered

Pricing and Availability

The T4 is available as a pre-order for 59€. The first units will ship early August.

  1. What advantage does this have over something like the MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru? The Quadra Thru gives 4 outs from one in, runs off of MIDI bus power, uses the MIDI out from my existing interface, and comes in at $50 (about 43€). The T4 takes a USB port and adds a device but I’m not sure that’s an advantage. Class compliant means good compatibility but isn’t as fast as a finely tuned driver like RME’s.

    1. Not piggybacking too much stuff off one MIDI port and potentially clogging the data
stream, maybe? Though I’m honestly not sure how much MIDI traffic there’d need to be before there was a noticeable increase in latency.

      1. I understand the difference. If you already own an interface that handles MIDI the Quadra (which I own as well) gives you 4 outs from your existing USB MIDI to din port. I guess if you don’t own an interface this would be handy. Or maybe if you’re pushing so much MIDI you’re hitting the bandwidth limit (though that’d be a lot of MIDI). But my point was in 99% of use cases I think you’d be better served by your existing MIDI interface and a box like the Quadra vs adding another interface just for MIDI out.

The manufacturer’s site is light on details but I’d be willing to bet this operates in a similar fashion – USB MIDI is mirrored to 4 output ports.

The 43€ price I had in my post was a result of converting $50 to Euros. I just took the result that Google gave me. Apologies for being 10€ off on that.

        1. Not all audio interfaces have MIDI – my UA Twin doesn’t, for example. This is a great option for me. I’m using a MOTU audio interface solely for its MIDI I/o which isn’t ideal.

  2. I’m happy to see device makers making inexpensive MIDI interfaces using the latest technology. And that price is ok. But I would have wanted to see 2 or 3 inputs along with the 4 outputs.

    1. Yep. Seems a nice interface, decent price (if with a bit of a ‘style’ bump).

Things that might sway me (use a combination of hardware and iOS):

      1) USB host mode. To me, this is what makes a midi interface ‘modern’. Preferably support for a hub.

      And/or

      2) DIN input and a method to default the box to a generic through box when not connected to a usb host.

  3. Seems like”compact” is the next empty buzzword in the synth world. This thing seems huge in relation to the connectors it offers

  4. “Next generation” seems to mean no MIDI input. To me that is “previous generation” unless we’re living in a time warp. I underscore the uselessness of such a device because we need MIDI IN for all kinds of syncing, MTC or MIDI clock.

      1. yeah it seems like I don’t see a use for something like this with most of my 5 pin devices because in addition to just syncing for performance, I also use the midi interface for editors (especially for things like the MOPHO that is way more user friendly with an editor) and if you are transferring data you need in/out.

  5. Now if only someone came up with a killer MIDI sequencer for iOS that handled 4 port MIDI nicely and with good timing..

      1. There are already so many sequencers out there. Would you really need an entire sequencer to use this box? Wouldn’t iOS just publish the 4 ports as different devices?

If you do make a sequencer, I hope you’ll consider offering musical/rhythmic capabilities that are missing in almost ALL of them.

  6. Howdy,

Will this allow me to use the Roland GP-10 “usb out” into T-4, then “midi out” into Korg “midi in” keyboard?

    Thank you
