At Superbooth 2018, we talked with Gerry Bassermann about the new Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet X synthesizer.
The Sequential Prophet X is a bi-timbral, 8-voice-stereo (16-voice mono) synthesizer that combines samples and synthesis. At the heart of its sound is a newly developed engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters.

The Sequential Prophet X will be available in the second quarter of 2018 with a projected MAP of $3,999. See the DSI site for details.

Yeah, Dave Smith promised that for Tempest too but never got that far….
Except we *know* the feature has already been implemented since 8Dio has additional sample packs available that will work from the onset. I’d wager the only reason user samples aren’t available straight from the get-go is because DSI is giving 8Dio some time to sell their sample packs.
If it doesn’t sample it isn’t a sampler. This is a fact. A $4000 sampler that doesn’t sampler is for suckas and fools because it’s not a sampler. Because a sampler samples. This doesn’t sample. It’s not a sampler. End of discussion.
As far as the demos of the sampled grand, it doesn’t sound like a real piano at all. It’s awful.

How does that Steinway sample not sound like a piano? I thought it was fantastic. I’m also not deaf.

I admire that he can tell the same story over and over again without any sign of exhaustion or lack of enthusiasm. Now we have hundreds of the same story on Youtube now each with more or less a bit pieces of the whole picture,Why not one long demo that covers it all by knob, by function.
USB stick business will be good. USB stick drive sample import ONLY ? Way to go, copying the Roland Aira backup methods. Psssst.. there is USB you can connect to a computer and even 3.0 which is very fast … (no its not a secret) 🙂 So it has a 150GB factory ROM + 50GB to purchase. Then if you have your own from a stick , where do they go inside the machine ? IOW how much storage has it total ? Not in the specs..
I think its 50GB purchase or user; the delay may just be for 8DIO to have an “exclusive” for a while
I’d suspect it’s a 256gb ssd drive. Less some space for overhead.
I was expecting to hear some V-synth type mangling madness…. but I didnt hear that in these videos
