The Gnat showcases what happens when extreme cost-cutting measures meet British ingenuity. And the Gnat Special shows what happens when you slap some wood on a cheaptacular synth!

    1. A used Volca Keys go for ~$100, can make all of the same sounds and offers more synth features (plus a sequencer, battery power and paraphony). Not sure there’s any value in a clone. That said, I reckon Korg could eek out a few more bucks by releasing a version with the same guts but with black and yellow ‘keys’.

  1. The great thing about this video is that it highlights just how far we’ve come since this “synthesizer” was unleashed on starving teenagers in the early 1980s. No wonder the TB-303 has such a seismic impact when it finally hit clearance bins. In comparison, the 303 is a full-fledged workstation.
