Abstrakt Instruments Launches Project To Create New LinnDrum PCBs

Abstrakt Instruments – makers of the Avalon bassline synthesizer – has launched a Kickstarter project to fund production of replacement PCBs for the LinnDrum LM-2 drum machine.

The company previously ran a successful Kickstarter project to fund production of OBX Synthesizer Voice Expansion & Parts.

Backers of the project can get bare PCB’s and PCB Assemblies for the LinnDrum (LM-2) Drum Machine, including:

  • LinnDrum MXR PCB Assembly
  • LinnDrum CPU Board PCB
  • LinnDrum CPU Board PCB Assembly
  • LinnDrum CPU Board PCB Assembly (w/o switches)
  • LinnDrum 5VSR PCB Assembly

There are no plans to recreate the Drum Board at this time.

See the project site for details.

      1. Hardware drum machines that use digital samples, do not “by default” sound better than software drum machines that use.. digital samples. Unless of course you have a shit sound card with lousy DACs. Also, as an owner of the LinnDrum when it first came out, I can tell you it is a very stiff sounding instrument.

    1. Maybe because the limitations of hardware strikes a creative ore with many artists. The endless tweaking possibilities of software is appealing for sure, but for me it often leads to exactly that; Endless tweaking:-)

As Rowan Atkinson as Captain Blackadder so eloquently put it, when served the option between “Rat sautee” vs “Rat Fricassee”: “Ohh, the agony of choice”

    1. For a full set of boards they are asking $1395 USD, and you still need a drum ROM board and an enclosure to make a LinnDrum clone.

That’s absurd in 2018, especially when the R&D was done 35 years ago.

In fact, I’d say it’s pretty hypocritical to denounce Behringer and get behind this cash grab.

  1. I don’t get this – firstly, Linndrums have their quirks, mostly to do with the PSU and reset circuit, but repair would hardly ever need replacement of the complete cpu or mixer board. Secondly, those pad switches are extremely rare – as far as I am aware, there is only one limited source of NOS switches on the planet and this is just squandering that valuable resource – unless they have been remanufactured, in which case please make them available at a realistic price.

    1. the pot board and the psu board are nice because they are cheap to be able to just replace. the cpu board would rarely need to be replaced, but if you’re one of those 3 or 4 or who knows how many people on the planet you’re in luck. it’s also being sold without the switches as an option.
