German sample library developer Orchestral Tools have announced a new virtual instrument collection, created in collaboration with composer and producer Tom Holkenborg, Junkie XL Brass.
Holkenborg’s film credits include Mad Max Fury Road, Deadpool, and the forthcoming James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez project, Alita: Battle Angel.
“I needed to build my own sample libraries,” notes Holkenborg, “and that’s why we’ve gotten to the point of creating my own brass library together with Orchestral Tools.”
Junkie XL Brass was recorded at the Teldex Scoring Stage in Berlin. Classic brass instruments – trumpets, French horns, trombones and tubas – were sampled in many different section sizes, with a dynamic range from pianississimo to fortississimo.
Junkie XL Brass is scheduled for release in late 2019 and will be available exclusively for the new Orchestral Tools Sampler Platform. The platform is capable of customizing every articulation to the user’s individual needs.

I’m a fan of Holkenborg but it seems like every third piece of content on this site is related to Junkie XL. Perhaps a little more variety?

As a brass player and composer, I’ve generally been pretty disappointed by what is available in the “affordable” libraries. It is tricky but not impossible to get it right, and having made several brass sample sets myself, I know some of the challenges. Hopefully, they’ll have some solid experts on hand.
It’s one think to get good sustained tones at all dynamic levels, and get the releases to sound right. Doing that for solo sounds is easier than ensemble sounds. I think ideally you’d want the ability to crossfade across diifferent dynamics in realtime so you could do realistic dynamic playing without pre-set timings. All very tricky to do.
