The Department of Music at Princeton University is seeking a full-time Electronic Music Designer/Research Specialist.

The position works with the Director of Electronic Music and Director of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk), as well as associated faculty, and serves as Assistant Director of PLOrk. Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of PLOrk include managing the PLOrk Rehearsal Laboratory at the Lewis Arts complex, co-leading and co-organizing rehearsals, and working on the development of custom software and hardware for PLOrk. Relevant ensemble direction skills are essential.

Additionally, the position involves collaboration with research projects led by the Director and related faculty to develop new electronic musical instrument designs and technologies. The Electronic Music Designer/Research Specialist will evaluate possible technologies such as microcontroller platforms and software libraries, work with project leaders on the implementation and testing of prototypes, and collaborate on research papers resulting from the work.

This position is initially offered on a two-year term with the possibility for renewal at the end of the two years. This is a full-time, 12-month position with a comprehensive benefits package. The Electronic Music Designer/Research Specialist works a varied schedule driven by the academic, concert and event schedule of the Department. The Electronic Music Designer/Research Specialist works occasionally on evenings and weekends during the academic year.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on research projects with the Director of Electronic Music and associated faculty.
  • Assistant Director of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk)
  • Aid in the ideation development and production of musical composition involving advanced uses of technology by Music department PhD candidates.

Qualifications:

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Music, Computer Science, or a related field
1-3 years of experience in music technology development
Music direction and/or conducting skills
Experience as an electronic music performer
Strong knowledge of at least one music-specific programming language (such as Max/MSP, ChucK, or Supercollider)
Strong background in programming (C, C++, Java, or similar)
Interest in and experience with advanced research topics in electronic music (instrument design, synthesis, etc.)
Good organization skills
Self-motivated, organized, and detail oriented
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, positive attitude, team player, problem-solving skills
Ability to work a schedule that includes long hours, varies from week-to-week, and includes occasional nights and weekends

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong background programming in C and C++ for audio
Familiarity with the JUCE platform and iOS programming
Familiarity with embedded systems and firmware programming
Valid driver’s license
Experience working with and/or mentoring students

    Maybe they should teach some management at Princeton.
