Petition Asks Moog To Put Subharmonicon Into Production

User Dry Wet Carrot has launched a petition asking Moog to put the Subharmonicon synthesizer into production.

The Subharmonicon is a semi-modular synthesizer, inspired by the Trautonium, the Rythmicon, and the Schillinger System. Moog describe sthe new synth as ‘a semi-modular harmonic kaleidoscope that divides into itself until everything that is up becomes down’.

The synth, introduced at Moogfest 2018, is a dual-oscillator semi-modular analog synth design, with dual envelope generators, a resonant VCF, VCA and built-in step sequencer. Beyond these features, though, the Subharmonicon features multiple sub-oscillators, logic functions and more.

The following video, via loopop, takes an in-depth look at the Subharmonicon:

  1. This is great, and I really want this to go into production (like, really really) but the petitioner is doing something a bit odd and perhaps, while not malicious of course, may backfire as being perceived as that: he/she is stating that if Moog doesn’t do it they will give their version to a developer so that that developer can clone Submharmonicon… that strikes me as similar to a threat to share intellectual property for purposes of appropriating it… I dont know about this area of law in the slightest but it just seems like the wrong way of going about the petition. Im sure the petitioner means well but this might backfire is all im saying…. Regardless Moog, please produce/release this anyway so I can stack it atop my m32 and DFAM and complete the trio!!!!

    1. Actually it does seem quite malicious. This is the upside-down world of the internet, where a company’s customers think they can dictate what a company makes and if they don’t get their way they make threats (like the threat that somebody will steal their circuit design if the ultimatum is not met).

Furthermore the petition text is full of fuzzy logic (ModularGrid is an invalid data set, and comparisons to Cwejman are far from the mark). The guy seems to have some issues.

And finally it’s entirely possible that Moog is working on the product as we speak, so the petitioner’s goals are simply not based in reality.

  2. I would get this! (assuming it would be about the price of mother32 or DFAM)
It iS a strange instrument and there are not enough strange instruments produced!

  3. Petition effectively states “if my demand is not met I will give my unit to an engineer to make clones!”

Wait, the petitioner already owns one?

Then what exactly is the guy’s problem?
