Synthesist & controllerist Gil Assayas (GLASYS) shared the music video for his latest track, Insomnia, which features Jordan Rudess.

“I’m excited to share with you my latest video, which features the amazing Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater.
I sent this tune to Jordan a while ago and asked him if he’d like to contribute something to it. He responded shortly after with this amazing solo performed on his Korg Kronos!
The song is called Insomnia and was inspired by many sleepless nights full of racing thoughts.”

Interesting… yes. Mostly because this is sort of different (mood wise) compared to each others’ earlier videos promoted here.
Nevertheless, playing fast doesn’t make any sense at all if you start to miss the timing even slightly. Even more so if your only point is playing fast. For that respect I guess Assayas guy deserves an appreciation here because now he doesn’t play as if he’s in a kind of speed competition. But our famous friend sounds a tiny bit of more sloppy, compared to him, to my humble ears.
And about “Zawinul” comparison… that should be the most generous compliment one could hear : )
I’m not sure if Zawinul was the most skillful keyboardist of his times, but he has started a new genre (genreless music as he describes) at least.

My fingers can’t even move that fast….and I am younger than him.
The guy had great dexterity control and technique but a 0.0 on virtuosity. Can’t stand it, playing notes for the sake of playing notes does equate a pleasing composition.
I suppose that is a typical complaint about prog rock (and Dream Theater) in general, but I still enjoyed Mr. Rudess’ solo and I would welcome his contribution to any of my tracks. 😉
