Modal Intros Argon8M Synth Module, Argon8X 61-Key Wavetable Synth

Ahead of the 2020 NAMM Show, Modal has introduced two new members in its Argon8 family.

The original Modal Argon8, introduced in Sept 2019, offers much of the sound design capability and functionality of the Modal 002, but in more compact and affordable keyboard.

Now Modal has introduced two new Argon8 models:

  • ARGON8M – A compact desktop module version that can also be mounted into a 19″ 3U rack with the included end cheeks, for those players with limited space.
  • ARGON8X – An elongated 61 key version using the same FATAR TP/9S mechanism with aftertouch, for those players who want an extended octave range.

Both models share the sound engine as the original Argon8, with 8 voices of true polyphonic flexibility (8 independent signal paths comprising oscillators, filter, envelopes and modulation).

  1. Excellent move! As a pianist, 3-octave keyboards simply just don’t cut it for me, so this suddenly makes the Argon8 a real possibility, interesting synth at a great price too!

    1. It’s funny how some people walk over to a new synth and lay both hands on it as if it is a piano, hammering out bass and treble voicing with the same plinky sound. They then declare that it’s not that great an instrument. Synthesis is all about layering different voices to build a texture that isn’t available any other way.

  2. Nice to see a 19 inch rack mount rather than desktop or eurorack format.

    $200 buck more for a full FATAR with AT? I would get that one. Very cheap.

  3. Okay I have a very noob question: I’m interested in the module, and I use a Korg DW-6000 as a MIDI controller. Since the DW-6000 is only 6 voice, could it still control all 8 voices of the Argon8 module? I don’t know anything about the relationships between the keyboard circuitry and the sound output.
