Modular Synthesizer Ensemble – Bigband Bugenhagenschule

Sunday Synth Jam: The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble, led by Gammon, is a workshop-project that invites participants to become the ensemble musicians.

Twelve individual Modular Synthesizers are provided, and participants are free to experiment and improvise, and play music together. A collective composition is then developed, rehearsed and finalized for a live performance.

  1. Sounds like a buzz kill taking away the freedom of patching so you have to listen to a stupid conductor tell you how to patch and what sounds to make. Bummer this is not good for modular because it does not sound fun.

  2. Glad we’re all agreed! Body language can lie. These learners don’t.
Also, random question: what’s the gender ratio at such a Bavarian evangelical private school? I get that it might be named after Dr. Pomeranus. It’s just that the school’s site makes me think it’s coed.

  3. Hi guys, sorry to tell you, but you all have NO idea what you are talking about.
May these Kids look bored and the name of the school sounds not very cool.
But they are all skilled musicians playing different instruments in their School Big Band. And, since their teachers are not as antiquated as you are insinuating they are open minded to show the kids other possibilities of making music.

This video shows a uncut live performance of kids who have seen these instruments a few hours before for their first time. And all of these Kids have patched and created their sounds by themselves!!! (e.g. the youngest was eight years old)
The most important aspect of this project is that the participants work by themselves creating their own sounds, rhythms and melodies. Also to provide a equitable situation and play electronic music together, even for Modular experts. My role is, to guide all of them along this way. The conducting of the final composition, is primarily to create a balanced structure and a supporting situation to concentrate on playing with the instruments.
In this special Workshop-Project the musical result is not that important than the developmental process. Important to me is, that the participants are creating their own outcome and can find their own role within the ensemble. This group dynamic process is not only important within a musical process, this is my contribution to strengthen a societal cohesion, a cultural evolution and the enhancement of the life of individuals.

Did you had the possibility to play electronic music in a ensemble during your childhood?

Why you think an concert and education institution like ELBPHILHARMONIE Hamburg is cooperating with and inviting a project like this?

Why you think the MODULAR SYNTHESIZER ENSEMBLE is an part of SUPERBOOTH since 2017?
Visit us this year 23th – 25th April 2020 in the big Auditorium.

    best regards, Gammon

Here you can see other projects with smiling faces and feedback of professionals, … 😉

  5. A great performance. I wish I’d had such opportunities at school, college. I think it is really forward thinking. No negatives here.

  6. Watching someone play a synthesizer is generally boring, because they’re wrapped up in the sound. That’s mostly true of everything but watching a drummer! Even if you’re adding some stage posturing for a show, you have to watch where you are to maintain the tune. I don’t think these kids look bored. I think they look transfixed. Remember, this was their first serious exposure to a synth. Any music class is a plus. There are too few of them. If they’re not going to take up the cello, they should take up something, even if its just a mid-line Roland. Good work, Gammon.
