Apple Logic Pro 10.5 A Massive Release For Electronic Musicians

Apple today unveiled a major update to Logic Pro X, version 10.5.

The company calls Logic Pro X 10.5 “a massive release for all musicians, including those producing electronic music.”

The update introduces an amped-up version of Live Loops, a redesigned sampling workflow, and new beat-making tools.

Here’s what’s new in Logic Pro x 10.5:

Live Loops

With Live Loops on the Mac, Logic users can now create music in new freeform and nonlinear ways. Loops, samples, and recordings can be organized into a new musical grid, where musicians can perform and capture different arrangement ideas into the timeline. From there, tracks can be further refined using all of the professional production features in Logic.

Remix FX enhances Live Loops with an exciting collection of electronic effects like Bitcrusher, filter, gater, and repeater that can be performed in real time over individual tracks or the entire song mix. Both features become even more powerful when using the free Logic Remote app, allowing users to pair their iPhone or iPad with their Mac to provide Multi-Touch control over Live Loops and Remix FX.

Sampler and Quick Sampler

Sampler represents the next generation of the popular industry-standard EXS24 plug-in, with a new design and expanded sound-shaping controls, while maintaining full backwards compatibility. Producers can use Sampler to create and edit sophisticated multisampled instruments, using elegant drag-and-drop workflows that automate complex production tasks.

Quick Sampler is a fast and simple way to turn any individual sound into a playable instrument. Musicians can pick a sound from within Logic, the Finder, Voice Memos, or even record directly into Quick Sampler. With just a few clicks, an imported sample can be trimmed, looped, and played across a keyboard controller, with access to creative sound-shaping controls.

Beat Creation

Logic Pro X 10.5 offers a collection of new creative tools designed to work together to make it fast and fluid to build original beats — an integral part of hip hop and electronic music production.

Step Sequencer is a new editor in Logic designed to make it fun and easy to program drum beats, bass lines, and melodic parts using an interface inspired by classic drum machine workflows. Step Sequencer combines a pattern-based style of music creation with powerful editing options for creating original parts — providing detailed control over note velocity, repeat, gate, skip, playback direction, and randomization.

Drum Synth provides a wide collection of kick drums, snares, toms, and percussion sounds generated entirely by software. Each sound is accompanied by dedicated sound-shaping controls to help musicians fine-tune their favorite parts. Drum Synth sounds can be used on any pad in Drum Machine Designer, where it can even be blended with samples for creative sound design options.

Drum Machine Designer, the tool for building electronic drum kits in Logic, has been enhanced to integrate with the new sampling and beat-programming workflows. Each drum pad can host the new Quick Sampler and Drum Synth plug-ins, making it easy to edit and shape individual sounds within a drum kit. After kits are created, they can be played in real time, or programmed with Step Sequencer.

Logic Remote

Logic Remote is a free companion app that allows users to pair an iPhone or iPad with their Mac to control and perform Logic features and instruments using Multi-Touch. The Logic Remote update supports triggering of sounds in Live Loops, browsing and adding loops, and applying Remix FX to a session.

Pricing and Availability

Logic Pro X 10.5 is available today as a free update for all existing users, and is available on the Mac App Store for $199.99 (US) for new customers. Logic Remote 1.4 is also available today as a free download on the App Store. A free trial version is also available.

  1. I would like better control over automation/modulation of internal and external parameters. You should have internal lfos on basically any parameter.

    1. The MIDI FX Modulator has an LFO and envelope that can modulate any exposed parameters in an instrument or effect in the channel.

  2. Every time there is a new release I wonder “Hm, have they fixed the bugs in the Environment that have remained unfixed since 1994?” Well, by now I know the answer, same as every time.

    1. they introduced many new ones. step sequencer is stumbling, live loop section sometimes does a strange pitch shifting on the samples or doesnt play them, ipad control sometimes hangs. so its a nice free update, but more a beta than a stable release.

    2. What bugs remain unfixed? I know the midi clock has a few bugs. Eg it doesn’t send midi clock when recording if there is a count in!

      1. that’s some bs right there. been trying to find a new sequencer to record outboard as ableton timing sucks. I don’t use the computer to sequence anymore, but still want to easily edit Sh!t and don’t want to be sitting there moving the start points of every recording.

  3. Free update to existing users, can’t complain there. If you own it, you got it. Done and done. If it sucks, dont use the free stuff.

    1. Imageline has always made that a big selling point in their marketing of FL Studio Yet, that has also been the case with Logic ever since Apple acquired Logic but Apple just states it in the notes and makes no mention of it in their marketing. I have always been curious of that given that that would be a major feature to Market it with, that and the best “band for your buck” price point on the Mac.

      1. I think people overlook the fact that software updates and paying for the updates suck. I understand it but it was magical to see how FL studio revamped the entire interface and I was able to just download instantly, for free. Although Reason wasn’t the case. Like 100 bucks an update. So if you started at Reason 5, we’re at maybe 10/11 now. And one update just gave you VST support. Another update was to market their new studio branding with a couple of racks included and MIDI OUT. I’m being generous with the 100 upgrade price too.

      2. Imageline does free major version updates (v10-v11, v11-v12, etc)
This is a free point.version update.
Logic Pro 9 to Logic Pro X upgrade wasn’t an option… just full price Logic Pro X.

That being said… looks like a pretty hefty update.
Looks like the sequencer is like some kind of Lego-ized mix between classic Logic edit view and Ableton Session view

            1. DOSDUDE1 is the absolute king, avoiding your Apple product becaming obsolete. I got Catalina on a MBA2011 and a Macmini 2009, and they work good. Of course a MBP 2019 run faster, but DOSDUDE1 did it. And did it weel. Thanks DOSDUDE1 🙂

          1. Yeah, DosDude’s patch let me run Mojave on my upgraded-to-the-gills 2008 Mac Pro 3,1. Worth the time to research and/or install if you want to extend the life of your rig. Obviously… back up before you go for it.

            http://dosdude1.com/mojave/

            1. Exactly. Its one of the best kept secrets for older Mac’s.

It also shows planned obsolescence on apple’s end…

  4. I hope Apple follows its trend of bringing these enhancements into Mainstage.

The enhancements to EXS24 are long overdue.

  5. Wow.

This is like a first attempt at a kill shot on Ableton. Probably not a direct hit but gosh it seems pretty good

We are looking at a $199 DAW that was already excellent. Then a .5 release thats free that is a fundamental feature upgrade. And the features are fantastic.

Obviously it may not all work as advertised an Im sure we’ll quickly find out but that’s not my expectation

    Did I mention its free?

    1. Bingo, this is a straight shot across Abelton’s bow. Not sure how worried they need to be, and I’d be careful all of you who are updating. The odds that the new stuff WORKS is slim. If Abelton prioritizes reliability, they can fight off Apple,

  6. Gonna try it, looking for alternatives to Ableton which still has no aaf support or mpe support. Also, cheap and doesn’t seem to charge for updates.

  7. Ardent user of Logic since 2.0 until going all in with Live in 2018.
Wouldn’t go back, trying to link midi cc to functions in logic doesn’t hold a candle to the ease of Live. The instantaneous recording and looping and building in real-time within Live is also, to me, superior than that of Logic.

  8. I’m sure Logic is eminently capable. I just don’t want to look at that UI for an extended period of time: big dumb buttons in the toolbar, useless cutesy circular waveforms on clips, twee icons for your instruments, phony skeuomorphic plugin interfaces, general screen clutter, etc. Logic even defaults to some sort of beginner mode that hides many commands and puts stupid wood side panels on your window (disabled via Preferences). Ableton Live is more clean, and dispenses with all the fake 3D.

    1. At first I thought you were just trolling but you know what? I actually agree with you, and have realized that there is something about the Logic UI that has always put me off, even though I bought it for $99 back in the day. Only used it for a few live multitrack sessions. The UI is simply very dated and has not kept up with the more sleek UI design of Live and Bitwig. That said the target market for Logic is fairly broad and Apple surely knows their audience.

    1. Is there a list of non compatible plug ins with this like the sweet water site for the MacOS 10.15 compatibility issue?

  9. I am quite happy with this update. And they flipped the grid compared to Ableton. For me, this makes so much more sense, this is finally logic :->

I do hope that the loop grid is coming in some way to MainStage as well.
