The latest episode of Produce Like A Pro takes a look at New Order‘s Blue Monday, a classic dance track seen by some as the bridge between disco and 80’s dance music.
The video looks at how New Order ripped off Kraftwerk, Donna Summer & Ennio Morricone – but also remixed them to create something iconically new.
you never really did your research properly did you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79Qb1tsoYZg was the real inspiration for blue monday.
Errr… that track was specifically mentioned in the video.
Less known is Giorgio Moroder was inspired by Jarre’s Oxygene 5 bass line
to compose iconic I feel Love baseline for Donna Summer
Ask Giorgio he will gladly smilingly say so.
during the same time trevor horn did stuff that was way better imo.
John Carpenter: Assault on Precinct 13 main theme from 1976 is also an influence on Blue Monday
Cool video! Now I am wondering what hardware vocoder they used on the vocal.
Left out one of the biggest influences :
Assault on Precinct 13 theme by John Carpenter
Vocal melody on BlueMonday is a straight lift from
Gerry and The Holograms – Gerry Hologram
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j1EgDUTt2iM
Even the rhythm of the vocal melody on BM including pauses is copied from
Gerry and The Holograms
Even though BS (Bernard Sumner) won’t admit it.
“ripped off” is a silly way to put it…
Boyz n Gals
Lesson here is :
No need to reinvent then wheel to make an original track.
Mashup our influences into some interesting dish.
