Softube Model 84 “Sounds Just Like The 80’s”

Softube has introduced Model 84 Polyphonic Synthesizer, a circuit-modeled emulation of a 1984 six-voice synth (Roland Juno-106).

In addition to recreating the sound of the original, it can be used modular in Softube’s virtual Eurorack platform, Modular, and also in Amp Room.

According to director and composer John Carpenter, “”It sounds just like the ’80s.”

Here’s an audio demo by Matt Johnson:

  1. I have absolutely no interest in a Juno emulation. In fact I was happy to see that old boat anchor go out the door many years ago. However I purchased this out of total desperation for new quality modules for Softube modular. I hope they do some more Buchla, next time. With the code “POLYPHONICICON”, you can get it for $79.

  2. this looks great, but theres like 5 fantastic juno emultations out now. Tal Juno vs roland cloud vs arturia vs cherry audio vs Softube. WHAT AM I TO DO haha

  3. I was already quite pleased with the less expensive version from Cherry Audio. They didn’t let that stop them from making one. Perhaps there was something lacking in these other versions that they really wanted to make.

It is a nice synth for fat basses, and period-evoking pads.

  4. Hmm, an expensive ilok version of a relatively simple synth that has already been done superbly by many for far less…have people run out of ideas for synths?

    1. It’s about creating an ecosystem of plugins that serves all needs and ideally doesn’t give the customer any reason to go look somewhere else. So when the day comes and you need that 80s synth, it’s one click away and you stay with the brand. Also subscription models require a portfolio that covers all the basics.

  5. the demo makes my toenails roll up
So filtered noise sounds like cymbals, on what planet?
Back to sound design lesson 101, cough

  6. Sounds great and Softube can do analog emulation, but the best part is Matt Johnson’s playing. He makes every synth sound good. The TAL Juno is already perfect though, is really light on CPU and supports the most excellent Soundforce hardware controller, so I’ll stick with that 🙂

    1. TAL Juno is a fantastic synth, one of my all time favourites. So we got full understanding here buddy 🙂 But I have to say that I’ve noticed that PWM sounds a little bit different on Model ’84. Like there are some extra harmonics here and there. I wouldn’t say it sounds better, just a LITTLE bit different.
      My humble 2 cents, cheers
