Retrokits RK008 Compact MIDI Sequencer (Sneak Preview)

Ahead of Superbooth 2021, Dutch MIDI tool developer Retrokits shared this sneak preview of their new RK008, a compact MIDI sequencer that looks like an old-school calculator, but provides a compact solution for recording and sequencing MIDI.

  1. Can you do your taxes on it? I have to admit.. given the next post “is the the Worst Eurorack Module ever”. … I seriously saw that calculator and thought to myself… “I think someone has hijacked Synthtopia”!

  2. Is this exactly what I’ve been looking for? Seems like a modern MMT-8 style sequencer that will fit on the empty space of old midi keyboards.

  3. Would love to see the ability to set quantize grid by typing a ratio of steps:beats–i.e., two, 2-digit values. That would cover lots of possibilities. Also good to see a a reasonably high resolution event clock. Not 96 ticks per beat (as some older hardware sequencers had), but more like 480- or that you could set the resolution in system preferences.

    Would be cool if you could save phrases as clips that you can move around and use in other sequences. I like this physical format, though. Very relatable.
