LEGO Robots Play Herbie Hancock’s Rockit

The Toa Mata Band, a robotic orchestra made with LEGO Bionicle / Technic series, shared their latest music video, for their take on Herbie Hancock‘s classic Rockit.

The Toa Mata Band is a project of synthesist Giuseppe Acito. Since its debut in 2003, Acito has covered Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, Beastie Boys and other electronic bands that influenced him.

“This 9th episode is yet another tribute,” he notes, “dedicated to an artist whose influence on electro, jazz and hip hop through this far-sighted song is tangible: the pianist Herbie Hancock!”

  1. Can’t find any info on how this is done, would love to see a “behind the scenes”. Are all the parts being played by robotics, except for Giuseppe on the bass station? or is there a backing track?

  2. Herbie gave the Gold Record for that album to Bob Moog. In the previous factory it was in the lobby by the trophy case that held his Grammy. Both were next to the door that opened into the factory floor. When I would give someone a tour I would open the door and say “If you stand right here, it’s the only place in the world where you can see a Gold Record, a Grammy and a forklift.
