iceGear Instruments Intros Nambu, An FM Synthesizer With A Difference

iceGear Instruments has introduced Nambu, a new 6-operator FM soft synthesizer that’s not designed to mimic the FM synths of 40 years ago.

Nambu is a semi-modular FM synthesizer that they say “incorporates modern ideas, not designed to recreate the sound and workflow of a vintage FM synthesizer.”

It’s not compatible with vintage FM synthesizers and you can’t import old DX7 patches. It doesn’t even come with a lot of patches – the synth is designed for people who want to do new things with FM.

  1. I guess what their demo video is trying to say is that ‘if you want to be able to create wretched sounds that will anger your neighbors and cause your pets to flee in fear, you really need this synth’! The reaction of my wife to hearing the sound coming from my studio was “What the f*** is that?…. Please turn it down.” Finally, my wife and I agree on something musically.

  2. “It doesn’t even come with a lot of patches” – personally I find that annoying. It’s nice to have some starting points and it implies that the synth is difficult to create useful sounds. It looks quite powerful but give us some examples of its output.
