Make Noise Spectraphon Review – “There’s Nothing Like This On The Market”

The latest Sonic Lab video features Matt Hodson, aka MATTHS, sharing his take on the Make Noise Soundhack Spectraphon, introduced at Superbooth 2023.

The Spectraphon is collaboration with Tom Erbe of Soundhack, who has worked with Make Noise previously on the Echophon, Telharmonic, Erbe-Verb and Morphagene.

Spectraphon uses real-time spectral analysis and resynthesis to create new sounds from those that already exist. It is inspired by classic electronic musical instruments, including spectral processors, additive synthesis, vocoders, and resonators, but it takes a physical form closer to the Buchla 259 and the Make Noise DPO.

Hodson says the Spectraphon is something “he’d definitely jump at”. Check out the video and share your thoughts on the Spectraphon in the comments.

    1. The Rossum Panharmonium was my first thought when I read about this Make Noise version, interesting concepts that I kind of want to explore. The Rossum was not easily available, this might be a good alternative.

      1. I guess that’s common for a lot of musicians; we don’t feel the need to understand the technical aspects of instruments that much. Never regretted any of my Make Noise purchases, so I feel safe trusting my gut instincts here.

      2. People with ghosts in their gizzards, fairies in their fingers and all the rest are to be cherished and gently encouraged to keep playing with art – and not to get too distracted by the science

    1. I don’t know what I’m writing, I don’t know why I’m writing this, I just know I have to share it with the world

    1. What does that even mean? You seem to just come on this site and crap on every single thing regardless of what it is. Seems like a pretty miserable existence.

  1. quickly sampled the video in various places and my take it’s an elaborate fart noise generator based on FFT?

  2. Hartmann Neuron. Which I prefer. I don’t like modular. It is the death of melody.
Be nice if he’d shut up for a few seconds so we could just hear the sound. But he likes to talk.

  3. I’ve generally found the euro rack and modular community to be one of the most positive, inclusive, and forward looking communities. The synthesizer community, like Synthopia, is more like the internet: mean spirited complainers. Don’t like a product? Don’t buy it or comment on it. Go play music. You’ll be much happier. Promise.

Rich, coming from the guy that likes to accuse commenters of working for a company, if they have anything good to say about a synth.
