Free Browser-Based Synth, Droid Resonator, Features 3 VCOs Per voice, MIDI Support & More

Droid Resonator is a free, browser-based synthesizer, built with HTML/JS/CSS and Tone.js.

It features 6-voice polyphony, with 3 VCOs/voice, MIDI support, an oscilloscope and more.

Features:

  • 3 VCOs with waveform/octave selectors & mix control
  • 6-voice polyphony (you can play chords!)
  • AMP and Filter envelopes
  • Lowpass filter with cutoff & resonance
  • LFO for filter modulation
  • MIDI keyboard support (with chord recognition)
  • Note latch mode for droning goodness
  • Real-time oscilloscope
  • Clean, single-screen interface with fullscreen mode

In our testing, it worked best with Chrome. If you give it a try, leave a comment and share your thoughts on it!

  1. It’s kind of fun. There is significant lag in entering notes via the mouse on the on-screen keyboard. Unfortunately, the MIDI API is not supported in Apple Safari. They should fix that.

  2. Browser instruments have become much more practical than quick demos, but the Safari Web MIDI limitation mentioned above is still a real constraint. For camera-driven instruments, the bigger UX issues are permission flow, AudioContext startup, and clear feedback before sound begins. In my Gesture Synth experiment, separating discrete chord gestures from continuous octave/filter/volume movement made the interaction easier to learn. I’d be curious whether Droid Resonator plans a touch-friendly fallback for browsers without Web MIDI.
