Live Improvisation For Dual Vintage Moog Modular Synthesizers & Drums

Composer & synthesist Anthony Marinelli shared this live performance video, capturing an extended synth jam with producer/synthesist Mike Dean and drummer Russell Holzman.

The jam features an amazing set of instruments, including dual Moog modular systems, an Oberheim Eight Voice SEM and a Roland Jupiter-8.

Here’s what Marinelli shared about the performance:

“No script. No presets. Just raw vintage synth power!

Join me for an explosive, 100% spontaneous synth jam featuring Mike Dean and powerhouse drummer Russell Holzman (@starpowerdrummer) performing on some of the most iconic vintage synths ever made – unlike anything you’ve seen

We’re firing up legends like the Moog IIIc (“The Plantasia Moog”), Moog Model 55, Oberheim Eight Voice SEM, Roland Jupiter-8, and the Minimoog—all dialed in and recorded live.

Turn up your speakers and witness what happens in real time when three artists meet in a room full of classic analog instruments

Special Thank You to Rob Rosen @RosenSound for supplying the most awesome Moog Model 55 & explosive Oberheim Eight Voice SEM!”

  1. Love acoustic drums with some decent synth work, and I would say that fits the bill. Incredible drumming and the collection of synths being used certainly doesn’t hinder the sound quality either. Very cool!

  2. Great way to start my morning! Nice ambient fields of synth pads with some soaring and sometimes sizzling leads! Live drums certainly drive the improvisation to unexpected territories. Funny how you three guys seem to all be in a sonic submarine and every once in a while one of you will peer up through the periscope and decide which way to go!

  3. I love this…. But I wonder why there are a lot of arpeggios being played by hand. Are arpeggiators not useful for playing with a live drummer?

  4. I love seeing vintage instruments in use, it makes my steampunk senses tingle. But don’t forget that it’s possible to make these sounds with modern gear, too!
