Synth Overlay Maker Oversynth Announces Its Closing Shop

Synth overlay maker Oversynth has announced that it’s closed down.

The company opened in 2019, responding to interest in the synth community for options for customizing the front panels of synthesizers. Oversynth offered many options – some tailored more towards improving usability, and others more towards letting you customize the look of your synth.

Founder Jeff Gruen said in his announcement that they’re ceasing operations because of ‘life transitions’. He also graciously told us “Thank you so much for providing coverage of our products over the years. Our business would not have been possible without Synthtopia.”

In his announcement, Gruen thanked the synth community for its support over the last seven years, and shared links to other companies that offer customization options for synths. You can read his full announcement below:

  1. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the definition of ‘Class Act’. I have never used any overlays before, always thought it was cool and very much needed for many products. All the best from someone who’s never been a customer but have had utmost admiration in the product and the needs it has addressed

    1. Indeed! What a true gentleman! I hope whatever he chooses to do next, is even more successful! A wonderful human being.

  2. I have one of their overlays for a Microkorg and it definitely makes the synth more functional by colour coding certain sections, and listing parameters on the panel that were found only in the manual. I appreciate what they did for us and their products were great. I’ll miss them.

  3. Nothing is selling and everyone is doom spending on food instead (or they are inflation drowned out of life and are drowning in expenses with everything becoming more expensive and wages stagnating). I noticed for me, for anything I am trying to sell, even at lower prices, takes 10x as long to sell in 2025 and 2026 than it did in 2024 and before.

    1. This is precious, I am so glad you of all people, is feeling the effects of your dear leader! You could not hold yourself from touting the tariffs and the policies of the the Criminal In Chief mental midget, and now that is it affecting you…..

Actually I don’t have to say another word.

      1. Buying the stuff I need from overseas, the prices have not gone up for me or only slightly….that is not the reason no one is buying (and I’m talking even big things like cars, no one is buying,). No one is buying because wages have not kept up with inflation, it has been a downward trend since the 70s or 80s.

Every president (both parties) have not addressed it (well done anything to stop it) and can’t. All the money printing during COVID being one of the worst offenders…..and I wonder who that happened under.

He is not my deal leader, I don’t like either party, I just hate Republicans slightly less since I am into hobbies that Democrats want to ban or severely limit (such as shooting).

Also, Dems are pushing the trans agenda too far by including children and it is painting a target on the back of all of us who are part of the LGBTQ+.. I support trans people but including children in the mix is a bridge too far.

I did not want to get political here, but you forced my hand.

      2. Also, on tariffs….it is better than doing nothing, but it was not the best solution.

What I would have done was instead of punishing outsourcing, I would have left that alone, but significantly rewarded domestic production by offering huge tax cuts/relief for American made products. It would be so significant to the point that the savings for these companies doing it here would be bigger than the savings of making the products overseas.

This is the perfect solution, but neither party will do it, sadly.

        1. A good solution would be for the government to require that anything produced for the military or supporting national security be made in the US, with key components made in the US also.

This would create a huge market for US goods, with a sensible driver, create a huge number of jobs and raise wages.

        2. Your reasoning is like a 7-year-old finding a box of matches and believing they have harnessed electricity! You’re treating “prices didn’t go up for me personally” as if that tells you anything meaningful about inflation. It doesn’t. That’s just pathetic anecdotal bias dressed up as insight. Macro conditions don’t negotiate with individual experience. Then you jump straight into a sweeping claim that “no one has done anything” about wage stagnation for decades. That’s not analysis; it’s flattening complex history into a lazy slogan. Different policy regimes, different constraints, different outcomes—but none of that survives a statement designed to make everything equally responsible and therefore utterly meaningless. The COVID money-printing line is the same pattern again: one convenient explanation stretched to cover a multi-variable event. It’s not just that monetary expansion played a role; it’s that treating it as the explanation is intellectually lazy. It lets you completely avoid engaging with supply shocks, global disruption, and demand rebalancing entirely. Then your political reasoning collapses into a total farce. You say neither party is acceptable, then immediately justify your preference based on secondary, manufactured cultural grievances: the trans threat narrative. What is this pathetic obsession with such an infinitesimally small segment of the population? Are you still worried that watching two men kiss might make you want to join in? Let me clue you in: conservatives do not give a flying flip about newborn healthcare, maternal support, food vouchers, after-school programs, or secondary education pathways. That is the real issue they consistently starve, and yet somehow a misgendered person in lipstick is treated as the silent killer of the young and innocent? Get a clue: your hobby of shooting guns is the actual number one killer of children in America. The sheer irony of policing people’s personal identities while completely ignoring that firearms remain the leading cause of death for children in America is stunning. You are panicking over your own insecurities, but yeah, it’s the trans people! Don’t smack into the trees head first whilst searching for that Forrest there Gump. The only jobs conservatives have ever cared about are preserving and streamlining tax breaks for the uber-rich. That is their entire economic policy: the aggressive, systematic redistribution of middle-class wealth straight upward, to the haves.
