The Massive Sound Of The Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 Synthesizer

This video, via MrFirechild, features the massive sound of the Sequential Circuits Prophet 10.

The Prophet 10 is one of the rarest of the monster synths, offering the power of two Prophet 5’s in one huge, knobtacular package.

Here’s what he has to say about the video:

This monster synth from 1980 , the Sequential Circuits Prophet 1, is used for all sounds in this Firechild track, This Is A Prophet.

The Prophet 10 is simply two glorious Prophet 5 Rev3´s stacked together with some additional bonus features!

  1. The Prophet 10 had a visual aesthetic rivaled only by modular synths and Yamaha’s behemoths! (And its sound was pretty awesome!)

  2. I liked the Firechild demoes of the Rhodes Chroma, a 16vco poly with ring mod 😀 not to be confused with the Polaris its much tamer follow-up

  3. Almost more amazing than the sound is the freaking condition of this Prophet-10! That thing is 35 years old, maybe more. There’s not a single mark or even sign of age on it. Incredible.

  4. Nice playing too. Spectacular demo of this synth. Better than most Prophet offerings I’ve heard.

Just awaiting delivery of a DSI Pro-2 :-)) This makes me all the more glad I ordered my first Dave Smith machine.

I also remember seeing Tony Banks play it on the telly back in the 80’s. And it certainly is in good condition! Obviously been well loved in a studio all this time and not rock’n’rolled.

  5. I played this synth a couple of times, back in the 1984-85. It looked spectacular, and sounded spectacular, too. If there’s a single instrument that initiated my lifetime-obsession with synths, it must be the Prophet 10, with Yamaha CS80 and Oberheim Eight-Voice coming close second and third. I feel very privileged that I actually had a chance to play all these instruments when they were almost new. I remember that the guy who owned the P10 swapped it for a Yamaha TX816 and QX1 in 1985 (!) what a dumb-ass…

  6. Outstanding demo, with music this synth was made for! Nice work on the percussion sounds too. I’ll keep this in mind when I’ll start work on my own demo videos.

  7. That was fantastic! What a beautiful beast of a synth, a true ‘player’s’ synth indeed. This is one of the best things I’ve seen here in awhile.

  8. The new Prophet 6 sounds as good if not better than an old, expensive, and unreliable Prophet 10.

    Prophet 6 = Reliable + more features + warranty.

Do not pass go; do not collect $200. Go directly to a Prophet 6.

    1. The prophet 10 has much more low frequencies than the prophet 6, this last one is absolutly not in the same ballpark Prophet 6 sounds cold in comparaison .I’ ve the 2 keyboards under my hands…

  9. You’d love fighting with the cassette interface and warming your hands over the instrument in the winter. Of course, I say that as a guy who used two Prophet-600s in tandem. Not the same as a Prophet-10, but panned left and right a little, it was still awesome. I agree, get a Prophet-6, if you have that level of analog itch. Prophets are near-modular in a few ways if you push them, too. Its not cheap, but pretty much everyone goes berserk and buys at least 2 or 3 synths that break the bank for a while. I think the P-6 would be in that Too Good To Miss category. Check out Peter Dyer’s great demo and be convinced.

  10. I own two Prophet 10’s, a Rev 0 and a Rev 1 and they are both treasured..
While they are similar to my Rev 3.3, they aren’t exactly the same.. They’re well worthy the money I spend on them keeping them both going and they both work 100%

The New Prophet 6 is nice, but take away all its toys and I doubt any Prophet 5 owners would consider it as a permanent replacement, but great fun nevertheless.. The pro 2 is awesome

Fairchild’s demo’s are good, but everything he does sounds like Vangelis..
