RobotSpeak Announces Monthly Modular Synth Building Workshops

On May 19 and 20, San Francisco’s music production school, Robotspeak, will be offering the first in an ongoing series of Modular Synth Building Workshops that will be led by a variety of master modular synth designers.

The first session on May 19 sold out within eight hours of the announcement. For those interested, there is still a spot or two left for the May 20 workshop at noon.

“You may be building an oscillator one month and filter the next, using each class to build all of the different elements of a Modular Synthesizer,” Steve Taormina of RobotSpeak said. “Each session will be overseen and advised by a different synth designer/builder, who will offer their expertise and time to bring back the communal modular synth building mind set from the past.”

The workshop will cost $150 per session and all PCB and supplies are included to build one module. Participants will be able to take their module home.

“We will build one every month,” Taormina said. “This is more than a product-based workshop; We want to build a monthly group where we can hang out and solder, and learn and share SDIY.”

See the RobotSpeak site for details.

  1. Be sure to check out our ROBOTSPEAk Facebook page for the most recently updated info about ROBOTSPEAk and the upcoming Modular Synth Build build classes in June! We will be building (most likely) a sick filter built and with any luck we will have a CNC machine for personally customized face plates. We are figuring all of this out as we go along and the response has been amazing. The idea is to attend these workshops and in the end after multiple sessions, have a modular synth that is bad ass for a minimal price. The West Coast Northern California Modular Synth explosion is in line!

    1. How about a little midwest love on this?

I’d love to do something like this. I’ve built a dozen or so modules, but I’m not good at troubleshooting and have a couple of modules that I could use help figuring out where I went wrong. These meetups sound like they’d be fun, a great way to meet some people and you’d know you’d come home with a module that works.

  2. I’m jealous! Wish I lived in San Fran, sounds like there are some really cool people in the synth world out there. This is such a great idea, I wish you the best of luck.
