Sure; grouping and macro mapping is a good way to set this up. But the big advantage when it comes to playing those racks comes when you start using the zone editors; both the instrument and MIDI effect racks allow you to specify exactly which instrument or effect needs to be used when you play certain notes, this can be setup with the key zone.
You can even set it up so that the whole thing gets influenced in the way you strike your keys; that is done using the velocity zone.
And as if it wasn’t enough (I know I’m skipping the chain selector): all those zone editors allow you to setup overlaps as well. So sections where one “chain” is fading out whereas the other fades in.
Speaking of the chain editor: how about being able to setup multiple groups which you can either play in parallel or simply activate on an individual basis ?
As such; I was left a bit disappointed. Grouping and macro control is one thing, but at least mention that there is even more racks than that.
i think the vid is aimed at beginners. and it’s only 3mins long.
Sure, that’s why I wrote “at least mention” instead of “also explain” 🙂
Yea, you are absolutely right, this is just scratching the surface. We wanted to make something for entry level users, and to keep it under 3 minutes. I’ve been considering producing a much more in depth discussion of racks, chains, zones, and creative uses of them all. It’d probably wind up being a good hour of material easily.
So sorry that it didn’t hit on the deeper subjects, but that must mean you are a more advanced user, which is a good problem to have!
Best of luck to you!

SHAME on you
Uh huh…
Everyone who spends time to help out other people knows that there are 2 kinds of comments. And quite frankly it doesn’t really matter if those are positive or negative as long as they’re constructive.
That is why I fully spelled out the reason as to /why/ I missed the mentioning of the zone editors. Nothing more, nothing less. Its most certainly not an attack or anything on the video itself.
Don’t read between the lines; you’ll only see things which aren’t there.
I was left a bit disappointed by this comment
Sure; You can point out all the shortcomings in AfroDJMac’s video.
You can even start talking about velocity zones. Blah blah blah…yada yada yada
And as if it wasn’t enough (I know I’m skipping talking about how long and drawn out your comment is)
you start talking about chains..which we all know…AfroDJMac has covered 😀
Speaking of long and drawn out: how about making a video yourself?
As such; I was left a bit disappointed. I came here to read comments and ended up with a short story.
This might start me up now!!!
You’re never going to make everybody happy with a tutorial, but I found this to be a helpful intro. I’ve been using Live for a couple of years but always thought Live Racks were a little daunting. This makes me want to give building my own a try.
People need to chillax…Seriously. The video is helpful to beginners and the other persons comment is just a personal viewpoint without being an attack. You other fanboys or whatever need to stop hating, hyping, and bowing things out of proportion. Afrodjmac responded professionally, and that’s that. Now go and do something besides spitting venom here! Maybe add that tension to your music ????
I started out reading your comment seriously…but then you used the word “chillax” and it all went down hill from there….
