At Moogfest 2016, design firm IDEO has an interactive sound installation onsite, Play-Sound, aka The Beach Ball Synthesizer.
The installation lets you play with sound by moving body-scaled inflatable spheres.
Here’s a brief video showing the Beach Ball Synth in action:
Here’s what IDEO has to say about the beach ball controllers:
Each sphere is equipped with inertial motion sensors—acceleration, rotation, and the Earth’s magnetic fields—enabling the spheres to act as a gestural musical interface. The gestures are interpreted through machine learning and used to control an evolving soundscape.
