New Real-Time Pitch-Processing Max For Live Effect, J74 PitchControl

Developer Fabrizio Poce has released J74 PitchControl, an Ableton Live / Max for Live tool for real-time synthetic pitch treatment and harmonization.

J74 PitchControl lets you manipulate an input signal through pitch-processing stages such as tuning, re-pitching, space placement, vocoding, LFO de-tuning and to harmonize it up to four voices, all in real time and controlled by MIDI.

The main application of J74 PitchControl is the human voice. While the tool can be used as a classic T-Pain style auto-tuning effect or as a fixed harmonizer, its main goal is to do pitch manipulation and harmonization via MIDI: you can indeed PLAY the device in real-time (improvising with a keyboard or any other MIDI controller) or sequence it upfront (using Ableton Live MIDI editor), controlling tuning, vocoding and harmonization, all at the same time.

Suggested uses:

  • Real-time input signal MIDI tuning (improvised or sequenced)
  • Real-time input signal MIDI harmonization, up to four voices (improvised or sequenced)
  • Vocoding, using an external (vocal) signal as modulator
  • Real-time auto-tuning (scale based)
  • Real-time auto-harmonization, up to four voices (by selectable intervals)
  • Virtual room mixing and spatial effects (pitch de-tuning, glide, sync and LFO modulation of pitch and delay)

  1. MIDI-controlled harmonizers are really fascinating, yet there is still no AU plugin that properly does the job. iZotope Nectar has latency, Eventide Octavox has no chromatic MIDI control, only scale mode, Manipulator has questionable sound quality, Zplane Vielklang doesn’t do live audio, neither does VirSyn KLON, Aegean Music Pitchometry claims to do it, but has no manual explaining the feature, also sound/formant issues.
This one sounds good, but it’s only for Max for Live. Not even speaking of MPE support.
Whoever may read this, please give us a live audio MPE harmonizer!

  2. Chick! I’m with you!

I used to use the wonderful KYMA Paca to re-pitch live vocals with MPE (OSC) with an old iPad mini and/or Madrona Soundplane.

However couldn’t justify such an expensive piece of kit doing only one job so I have been looking to replace that function … for 4 years! In that time I really should have just learned Max and made one myself.

Live re-pitching via MPE would be amazing. Maybe Madrona Virta does it? Need to explore further.
