Live Performance With Mutable Instruments Plaits Module

Sunday Synth Jam: This video, via Halt! Run!, captures a live modular synth performance that explores the various modes and timbres of the Mutable Instruments Plaits Eurorack module.

Modes used on Plaits are (in order):

  • 7 Chord
  • 6 Wavetable
  • 5 Additive

Here’s what they have to say about the technical details:

In this patch I wanted to focus on ‘playing’ rather than sequencing. I’m using Pressure Points from Make Noise to open up a VCA, while manually manipulating the Timbre and Morph controls of various modes on Mutable Instrument’s Plaits.

The bass sound is a four note pattern via Make Noise STO, passing through LxD on its way to the mixer.

String-y sounds are from Mysteron being plucked by a random pattern from Marbles and sometimes manually by me for additional control. Percussive elements are from BIA and Plonk, via random but clocked triggers from Marbles and a Disting MK4 and timbres manipulated in real-time.

Pam’s new workout provides the master clock and a few LFOs, and Ultra Random from SSF adds an additional touch of unpredictability.

Mysteron and Plaits both pass DLD from 4MS, and are sometimes ‘frozen’ for additional textures.

Finally, all parts are being managed through Hikari Instrument’s excellent 7 channel mixer before passing the Erbe-Verb.
