Moog One Firmware Update In-Depth Overview & Demo

Earlier this month, Moog Music released a firmware update to the Moog One synth that adds a variety of new features.

This video captures a live stream, an in-depth overview of the new features from Moog engineers Geert Bevin and Amos Gaynes.

In the second half of the video, synthesist Lisa Bella Donna demonstrates the updated capabilities of the Moog One with a performance, showcasing the new features and sound library of Moog’s flagship synth.

  1. Ok so this is not a Troll but , I’m truly interested
Where are we with The One now , initially there where some issues with fan noise which may or may not have been addressed but not a deal breaker and I believe there where other issues with FX patch levels amongst other things that agin may have been addressed . I know some early One owners where not happy at all and even returned it for a refund but many seemed to be overjoyed and pleased with it

but the Elephant in the room is the sound , how does this $8,000 beast really sound ?
I mean does it sound like a analog poly synth that can rival the other modern analog polys available today
(OB6 etc…) or even the vintage classics we all know and love ? There seems to be mixed reviews at best
and so far I have not heard that warm analog warble detune VCO sound we all know and love . Can The One quench your thirsted for the vintage sound of the Prophet 5 , OBX , CS-80 , Jupiter 8 etc… of course it will not sound exactly like these but can The One whole it’s own as far as rich analog tone character ?

    1. Hi Ether, yes its had its share of struggles on release, but as an owner I can confidently say it has extra suace compared to my p6 and OB6. I never owned a p5, obx, cs-80, etc – just a juno 60 and 106 for vintage boards, but compared to the p6, theres more life in each One note. Once its put in a track, and treated, i dont notice as much difference to my other polys, but playing it by itself in the evening is a treat for me each time. The keyboard action is really a treat compared to the other standard keys – very expressive, sensitive, and pleasing IMO. I’ll stop there, but theres my 2 cents.

    2. Sound is really hard to judge. I think Jupiter 8 for 12K $ is also completely not worth it. I have Prophet 5 and it is really sound nice, but some things are not possible on it for example might brass 80s style. Cheaper Jupiter 6 doing that much better.
So far I saw only one comparision OB6 vs Moog One. And in fact Moog One wasn’t superior over OB6. But that really means nothing. Moog One sound great and it isn’t matter that it isn’t or is 8K sound.
With Moog One you get modern analog synth which should last next 30 years. Old synths aren’t so good like all people thinks. They are cult, but isn’t like they are versatile in every aspect of its sound. And cult sometime make clear view blurry. You really need to get synth in your hand to say if it is fit to you or not. You also need have your style and you should say if this or this synth is fit your style. Sometime Moog One only follow your style, some time Diva or Minibrute 2 is enough.
And btw AC noise of Prophet 5 is really really loud.

  2. “Ok so this is not a Troll but.. how does this $8,000 beast really sound?”

Since the video has 45+ minutes of amazing audio demos, it seems like your comment actually IS a troll.

    Give them a listen!

    1. I’m just looking to hear that ANALOG POLY WOW FACTOR (APWF did I just coin that ? ! )
and I just don’t hear it , do you hear it , can you please point me to it or maybe your just blinded by the light ?
When you play a chord on a Prophet 5 or OBX etc… you hear that APWF sound right away .
For 8 grand I want character , I want VCO detune drift heaven , so I’m asking hear because maybe I’m missing something , maybe thats not the point of this synth , maybe I’m living in the past chasing a vintage sound thats gone forever .

      1. If you don’t hear it, then it obviously doesn’t click with you. That doesn’t make it a bad synthesizer, it just means it doesn’t suite your taste or needs. A lot of other people do seem to like it and think it’s worth the investment.. Asking them why they like a synth that you don’t like is kind of pointless though. It’s just a question of taste.

  3. You guys are trying to figure out how something taste by watching a video of someone eating. Its not going to work. I can say that the Moog One sounds amazing and its worth every penny with the sound, features, functionality, build quality and the slew of updates since its release. Oh, and the FX are great, maybe beyond great.
If its out of your price range, that shouldnt make it instantly sound bad, i mean, it’s MOOG, not even a conversation. Funny, it took Moog to make an expensive synth for everyones ears to stop working. “Sub Phatty -$800, sounds amazing but this Moog One….I don’t think it sounds so good.” Typical internet.

  4. ive listened to lots of videos and i played one last week in a shop. i think ive been able to pin down what im hearing after interacting with one directly for an hour. Honestly…it sounds DCO-ish to me.Some great textured sounds and amazing routing possibilities (and its beautiful on the eye) but it just doesnt have the bite of an old VCO. Many say it sounds “Modern VCO” . i guess that translates as “DCO” to my ears. i think they have over-cooked what they describe as an electronic circuit that is constantly compensating for oscillator tuning, thus crippling its ability to sound “dangerous.”

i do get what AnalOG is sayin…
