Shut Up & Play: Sounds Of The E-Mu Emax Sampling Synthesizer

RetroSound’s Marko Ettlich shared this retro synth demo of the sounds of the E-Mu Emax sampling synthesizer.

The Emax is an 8-voice hybrid synth from 1986 that combines digital sampling with analog filters. While it was one of the most affordable sampling keyboards of its era, it remains highly desirable for its unique sound.

This video offers a talk-free sampling of the Emax’s classic sounds and capabilities. If you’re interested in hearing more, check out the playlist below, which features full Emax performances;

  1. This was the sampler that launched a thousand Mirages, because they were far cheaper, but this one clearly had the edge in overall sound quality. It led me to buy several of their Proteus 2000 modules like the XL-1, Virtuoso and Planet Earth. All still rocking, years later. E-mu knew how to program their arse off.
