Alpha Theta – the company formerly known as Pioneer DJ – has introduced Chordcat, a portable groovebox that features an 8-track sequencer, 145 instrument sounds, 16 drum sounds & more.
Features:
- Chordcat can suggest up to 110,000 chord combinations
- Versatile arrangement features and intuitive instrument control
- 3 built-in effects – Add unique touches to your music with 3 effects – Arpeggiator, Delay, and Ducker – all of which you can manipulate using the XY pad.
- Arpeggiator: Creates melodies from chords.
- Delay: Adds depth to sounds and spatial dimension to your music.
- Ducker: Adds dynamics and emphasis, creating a sense of movement in your tracks.
- Running Direction – With Running Direction, you can change the playback direction of 4×4 step-sequenced patterns by pressing a single button. Choose from 4 options – right, down, clockwise, and counterclockwise – to discover new phrases and rhythms.
- Sound presets and tone-shaping tools – Spark fresh ideas during the creative process by switching between 145 sound presets and 16 drum kits designed for a wide range of genres.
- Key and scale settings – When you set a key and scale on Chordcat, only the notes that belong to the selected key and scale are mapped to the keyboard. For example, setting the key to E and the scale to minor blues will arrange the notes of the E minor blues scale on the keyboard so you can improvise however you like, knowing that any note you hit will blend in harmony with your melody.

Pricing and Availability:
The Alpha Theta Chordcat is available now for $299 USD.
It looks cute and all, but this is still Pioneer DJ and they don’t finish their products. It’s just retail for them – release the product and move on even when reasonable firmware fixes are needed. I love my AS-1, but I would never buy from them again.
OMG, this is wild! For so many reasons. Seems kinda left-field for the Alpha Theta product line. Could have easily fitted into the Toraiz lineup, except that aesthetic!? What in the world? Love the video. 90s groovebox vibes. Seems like Chordcat, Kordbot and Orchid are all running in parallel worlds. Which timeline will you choose? Can’t wait for the Korgcat. Or Uli’s Boredcat…
145 sounds and the best one you have to show off is “1989 casio piano rompler”
Get an MPC one and you can do this plus a million things more. Plus mpc help your streedcreds.
Huh. 110k chords, is in fact more chord combos than I currently know.
With a 299 price point, the sound engine isn’t the focus, the amount of chords plus a midi out is.
Plug that into a wavestate module or anything else on a midi Chain and I’m pretty sure things can get lush, complex quick.
Plus an xy pad gives kaoss pad vibes in a battery powered portable groove box.
Hoping they develop it offer updates as this would get customer loyalty
