New Software Synth, Solstice, Turns Any Sample Into A Playable Landscape

Minuit has introduced Solstice, a new software synth for Mac & Windows that they say is designed to “Turn any sample into an explorable landscape.”

Here’s what they have to say about it:

“Solstice makes any sample into a unique, playable map, revealing hidden textures within your sounds. Made with ambient, experimental, and aleatoric music in mind, but versatile enough for any genre.

Solstice generates a unique map for each sample, clustering frames by timbre similarity. Click anywhere to play, drag to morph between timbres, or let it drift into patterns you didn’t know were there.”

Pricing and Availability:

Solstice is priced at 85 Euro. As of this post, it is available now as a 30-day demo. Minuit says that they are working to get their webshop up and running.

  1. That’s the pad machine of the gods, for sure. You could get lost in it pretty easily. The science-fiction sounds are obvious enough, but it has a sweet side. It will probably require the same woodshedding as a synthesizer, but it also seems more musical than some of its wilder-haired peers. I look forward to the reviews.

  2. Wow, the same thing is happening here as in MatrixSynth. I cannot watch videos embedded by link to Youtube. Google insists that I log in. Well, I am logged into Youtube, Google, you bunch of minge munching festering worms. All you have done is screw up people’s ability to legally connect with your platform. So brilliant it is almost a Trump move. Bravo.

By the way, this Solstice seems like a pretentiously randomized form of granular using some fractal algorithm for the graphics. I suppose it’s fine for Hans Zimmer approximations, except Zimmer does stuff like this without fancy tools, just skill.

    1. “minge munching festering worms”!
      Love it.
Well played my fellow internet user.
Incidentally, are you using an adblocker? I’m in the UK and YouTube is hating adblocks right now.
It’s still blocking ads, but is taking much longer to load videos (basically the ad is a blank screen).
Sometimes I’ll get a message telling me adblockers are against YouTube’s TOS.
However, if you log out and navigate like you don’t have an account, it works fine.
Ok YouTube, I’ll just not have an account then.

      1. Would you also “fix it for others”, for instance, when a multi-billionaire says, “this house is so cheap for a few millions” ? You ain’t entitled to “fix” other people’s opinions.

  3. I’m trying to understand how the voronoi viz is related to the spectral content. Maybe my expectations were too high. But what I see is not what I thought I would hear.
