Midicake UNA Combines Generative Sequencing With Hands-On MIDI Control

Midicake has introduced UNA, a hardware MIDI composer designed to turn keyboard playing into an evolving three-part arrangement.

Rather than simply recording incoming notes, UNA uses the chords it receives as a harmonic source for three coordinated tracks: chord and rhythm, melody, and bass. The chord track establishes the harmonic foundation, the melody track generates arpeggiated and sequenced phrases, and the bass track develops its own patterns around the changing harmony.

Users can play chords and steer the arrangement in real time, adjust parameters using the hardware controls, or let the sequencer evolve on its own.

Features:

  • Three coordinated MIDI tracks generate chord/rhythm, melody and bass parts.
  • Incoming keyboard chords guide the harmony across all three tracks in real time.
    • The chord track supports rhythmic chord patterns, progressions and sustained drones.
    • The melody track combines arpeggiator-style behavior with step-based sequencing.
    • The bass track generates or plays edited bass patterns that follow the harmonic input.
  • Three workflows support hands-on playing, real-time parameter adjustment and autonomous pattern evolution.
  • Keyboard-split mode lets one hand supply chords while the other plays a solo line.
  • Eight dedicated parameter knobs provide direct access to musical controls during performance.
  • An 8 + 16 modulation system lets users animate parameters and create evolving sequences.
  • Sequencing options include pitch, gate, velocity, octave, MIDI channel and delay, alongside additional documented track parameters.
  • Pattern tools include ratchets, trills, swing, probability, accents and Euclidean-style muting.
  • Chord chains and chord suggestions provide additional ways to develop harmonic material.
  • Sustain and live-play features support performance-oriented transitions and interaction.
  • Patch storage and instant recall allow users to move between arrangements, with Patch Chain and Program Change features documented for the current product.
  • Two independent TRS MIDI outputs support connections to multiple instruments or MIDI destinations.
  • USB-C and a USB host port expand connectivity with computers and compatible USB devices.
  • MIDI clock support keeps connected drum machines and other sequencers synchronized with UNA’s timing.
  • The free browser-based CONNECT app provides screen mirroring, patch management, routing, visualization and contextual help.
  • The optional Angle Stand holds UNA at a playing angle and provides mounting points for a phone or tablet running CONNECT.

Pricing & Availability:

Midicake UNA is available to preorder in an Early Bird Edition priced at $519.00 USD. The first 150 units are scheduled to ship between December 2026 and January 2027.

  1. Shocked at the price to be honest. It’s easily double what i was expecting.
It’s very nice for sure, but for a box that size that doesn’t even have it’s own sound sources…
My Ableton Move is considerably cheaper and does a million more things.
