Steve Reich On Tape Loops, Repetition & Phasing

In this series of video interviews, British percussionist Colin Currie talks to one of the founding fathers of minimalism, composer Steve Reich.

Reich discusses:

  • his early tape loop work, It’s Gonna Rain;
  • his early ensemble work, Music For 18 Musicians, which has been extremely influential with electronic musicians; and
  • Clapping Music, a work that explores the rhythmic possibilities of performing a short phrase against itself with varying rhythmic offsets.
