Hammond & Tony Monaco offer their take on the history of the Leslie speaker.

Lots of interesting tidbits of electronic music history in this video that takes a look at the origin of the fantastic Hammon/Leslie sound.

This is my type of keyboard demo: Hammond guru Tony Monaco jams on the Hammond & demonstrates the Leslie 122.

Not a lot of talk, just a great musician making great music with a great instrument!

These Leslie tone cabinets are designed for single-channel organs whose pedal range extends down into the lower frequencies.

The sound is “separated” with the highs reproduced by a horn rotor and the lows reproduced by a bass rotor. Both the horn and bass rotors can be operated at two speeds : Fast (Tremolo) or Slow (Chorale).

These models also features a traditional tube amplifier for the “warm tube” sound.

The inimitable Tony Monaco does his thing on the Hammond 44 Melodion.

If you ever get the chance to see Tony Monaco live, do it; they guy is a monster on the Hammond!

Tony Monaco is one of the most impressive grooving musicians you’ll ever have a chance to see. He represents Hammond each year at NAMM, and this year was no exception.

Monaco was demonstrating the range of sound he could get by using the combination of a laptop to generate beats, pedals for bass, and the two Hammond keyboards to trigger organ, synth & electric piano sounds.

Monaco isn’t just an incredible musician – he also always makes you feel like he remembers you and appreciates that you came to see him do his thing.

We heard stories about a mysterious unofficial NAMM jam-bus that he’s been known to play at after hours, into the morning hours. If you know anything about the NAMM jam bus, let me know!

We had a chance to see Tony Monaco again at NAMM, and like always, we were impressed by his incredible musicianship and his warmth.

This is the way he greeted us – even though we’d only really talked to him in any depth once before at the Summer NAMM show in Indianapolis.

What a pro! If you ever have the chance to see a Monaco gig, get there!

      something to think about

You can tell whether a person plays or not by the way he carries the instrument, whether it means something to him or not.

Then the way they talk and act. If they act too hip, you know they can’t play shit.
