Behringer Teases Knockoff Of Classic E-mu SP-1200 Sampling Drum Machine

Behringer shared this sneak preview of the SP1200X Sampling Workstation – an inexpensive, unofficial copy of the classic E-mu SP-1200.

The original SP-1200 is a 12-bit sampling drum machine, designed by Dave Rossum and released by E-mu Systems in 1987. The SP-1200 has been a weapon of choice for hip-hop, house, and drum-and-bass production ever since.

Details are still to come, but they say that the Behringer SP1200X is ‘coming soon’ and with a target price of $200. High-end alternatives to vintage SP-1200s are also available, including an official reissue from Rossum, and an updated version from Isla Instruments, the SP-2400.

We’re making it open source. Because creativity should have no limits, and iconic instruments shouldn’t cost a fortune,” says Behringer. “We’re not just bringing back a legend. We’re setting it free.”

  1. on its face, this has to be the most inexpensive device with that amount of I/O, controls and a display, like, 200 usd is insane.

    1. I think with all these new releases, especially the new open source ones, that B will bypass the traditional marketplace sellers and sell direct.
I just don’t see how they can hit their target prices whilst being distributed by the likes of Thomann, Sweetwater, Andertons etc.
The retailer usually takes a good 50% of the sale price (perhaps lower if they can be assured of high volume sales).
I can genuinely see them selling AliExpress style direct to customer keep the price low.
If so, that will be a big hit to these retailers as B’s products are quite good sellers.
